i'm again doing a series now something little different, i have even managed to surprise myself. young finnish men, in black & white.----
Mikko is 23, and studies something arts and graphic design related i think. he's also a singer in bands called the Sinkage and Grendel. what makes this interesting is that he is very quiet, very finnish in other words, and not such an egoist what u expect from a singer. he practically reminds me of "Silent Bob", the movie character, heh. he's also a very calm, easy to photograph person. i think it's nice to start the series with someone whom i can say is very finnish in the positive sense.

it's funny... i've a subscription for a feminist german magazin and the current edition features a report about the situation of finnish women. it's very interesting, especially cause i want to live in finland in the future. in the text it says that the finns are pretty quiet people... and you mention it in your comment, too... would you say that's really a typical thing? and why?

hmm, i don't know about the 'real' reasons, it's just a cultural thing... actually, it's the background. finnish people came out of teh woods not so long ago...we used to live alone (i mean some thousands of yrs ago) in the woods, we don't have a strong community culture like some other cultures, mexicans or such. what i mean is that like in Italy, the family and community is very important, the reasons to that go far back in the history, and our history is different. so even today we are indvidualistic and communication is not the most natural thing. we only speak if we have something to say, no bullshit and chit chat. the company of the americans makes us feel uncomfy because they're so different...
anyway, i hope u understand better. yet, the silence is not unfriendlines by all means, keep that in mind

fins seem to be such a serious folk - but i feel very comfortable with that. it's one of the facts that intensifies my wish to live in finland. you say you were used to live alone and you're pretty individualistic. i think that's a reason for fin women being so adorable strong and feministic.
i know you were in the usa... a friend suggested a a trip to new york to me, too but i promised i'll never go there. i just don't like the american lifestyle and polticians

Ulkoasu pettää kuitenkin usein, ja perusilme mielletään vihaksi tai suuttumukseksi.
Mitä "hiljaisiin suomalaisiin" tulee, niin käy joskus savossa; ne tyypit pälättää niin paljon, että pitää rumasti keskeyttää, jotta keskustelussa pääsis eteenpäin.

excellent portrait, ms.9! i really love the way you cropped it. splitting his face not-quite-down-the-center works beautifully. it's extremely intense. the BW is done perfectly too. good choice to have him wear black with the black bg.

Yes, he looks very quietly intense. Photographically, it is an interesting shot. I find the brightness on the forehead to detract from the eyes slightly. A crop slightly above the eyebrow might help bring focus back where it belongs. A quality piece though. Looking forward to seeing more.
