Description Results: 1st place! Points of Judges: 9 10 8.5 8- 35.5 So excited!

Riding a Hototo is like riding a wave. The rolling surge of power moving forward in a steady flow is the greatest feeling in the world to Hope. She guided the giant horse around the arena with quiet subtle hands and Aldis responded with ease. Being her first show Aldis showed no sign of nerves in front of the crowed and enjoyed working through her performance. Hope felt great satisfaction in training this mare, just mounting her alone is an achievement. But to gentle, and train a giant horse to perform fluid, beautiful movements is a great accomplishment.

Handler: Hope Laweson
Mare: sVa Aldís
Age: 99 years
Breed: Purebreed Hototo
Stable: Shekinah Valley Acres
Event: The Beauty of the Giant's Gala-Dressage
Starting number:18

I like how this came out. I didn't add as much shine as I usually do I think it's better. But that's just what I think. I'm getting burned out on the Gala pictures. I'm still loving the show, but I don't know if I'll be able to finish my entries. I'll atleast try to get Ardy in under saddle, either dressage or Haute Ecole. Mean while, I might work on something else.

I was just going through some old Hototo stuff and I happened across this picture. I still think this is one of your best! You should have a go at drawing her again

I plan on it! All the Hototo's popping up lately has made me really want to bring my two out again. I love them. But I have a list to get through first. But soooon.

Good lol. I am going to finally get my boy into some stuff....his story kinda relied on me getting another Hototo but the breed kinda fell out. Now I can design a second one, so tomorrow I think I will be working on some ideas for her

You are now allowed to design 2 starter Hototos....I was quite surprised when I read that, believe me!

It was so hard for me to design the stripes.

But they came out so pretty ^^ And you can always do a minimal striped one...that is what I am doing ^^

Yeah I prefer the minimal stripes usually. But I have one of each, crazy stripes and minimal.

Thank you so much! Ugh I actually feel like I color the feathers differently every time. lol I think sometimes I spend different amounts of time on them and this was one of the more extensive ones. Usually it's "Uuuuggh one more leg!"

I absolutely love how you draw and shade your braided manes, they always look so realistic. This horse is also very beautiful. How many hands is she supposed to be? She looks huge in comparison to the person.

If you ever get tired of my commentary feel free to tell me to be quiet.

Rider position is pretty good, you brought the eyes up despite them being down in the reference. The hands appear to be slightly more upright than the source image, but not quite the straight stack that one wants to see (fingers stacked one on top of the other with pinkies on the bottom and the rein coming up between pinky and ring finger into the fist and pressed between the thumb and forefinger, which pushes the slack of the rein forward in front of the hands rather than behind.

I'd like to see the rider's knee and hip slightly more open, but I think it is closed because the ankle is stiff and locked open. Ideal is heels below toes, but level is adequate, here you can see that the toe is below the physical heel of the foot, though it is level with the heel of the boot. You'll also note that the stirrup leather is not perpendicular to the ground, which decreases stability of not only the lower leg, but also the seat. The stirrup has slipped back on the foot due to lack of weight in the heel. The heel comes up, stirrup slides back as the leg naturally shortens through the knee and hip as the heel raises and with the toe dropping the stirrup can only go backwards.

I would imagine on such a large horse that the girth would be closer to the end of the billets rather than right up snug with the flaps. Dressage girths are a lot smaller than other English girths, mostly to prevent bulk from being placed below the rider's leg and there's often a handspan or more between the end of the flap and where the girth starts.

I love the detail in the boots and jacket and the braid came out really nice and managing all that hair in general is a feat in and of itself. The dapples are also nicely done.

As always, nicely done and good luck in the show! I hope you take my words in the spirit that they're meant. Your skill level is at the point where these little details matter and speak a lot about how much you know or don't know about your subjects. Just things to keep in mind for next time (and will probably hear a lot about when you finally find an instructor!).

No No I love it! I purposefully moved her head b/c I had your last comment in mind. As long as you keep it as understanding as you can I will try to always take your critique in mind. I don't know anything about rider position yet (haven't gotten around to buying books yet) So all the information you gave me I can take and fix the next picture. I didn't know about the straps, nore about the stacked fingers. And explaining the stirup iron and toe/heel thing really helped me understand the saying I've always heard "heals down" but never knew why that was.

So thank you so much for taking the time to write all this up, I will be going back to it to refresh before I do the next rider picture.

Oh good! I always have a little bit of worry that I might eventually wear out my welcome, especially when it starts getting down to nitty-gritty things.

That's part of the reason I noted specifically that you brought the eyes up as I know it's been an issue before *grin.* I'm happy to be able to share, what use is knowledge if you can't use or share it, right?

"Heels down" is the mantra of many a riding instructor, it's just unfortunate they don't always explain why!

You're most welcome, again, glad I can be of help and it's wonderful that you're so open to it and continuing to increase your knowledge base and trying to improve.

Srsly... girl.. give me your talent
I always have problem drawing draft horses, since I am used to drawing warmbloods (even arabians are problem for me ) but yours are just beyond beautiful Also the fact, that the hototo breed is fantasy one, this makes me imagine quite perfectly how'd they look in real
I think there's no need to comment on the background xD In your case, no matter how simple or detailed... I always feel the atmosphere
Gorgeous work, as always

This is so gorgeous! The color of the horse fits really well in the colder colors of the background. I especially love it how you managed to give the horse such a powerfull look. The manes and tail are beautifully shaded and they look very soft. The sparkles and the light from behind gives the drawing an extra dimension! Well done! Great job!
