Description This elf was a character in a role-playing campaign when i was in high school. His name is Armakuni.

As the right illustration clearly shows the character was heavily influenced by Wendy Pini's drawings in Elfquest, both in concept and art style.

Armakuni has a somewhat reckless personality, and thus got himself almost killed on several occasions. I decided to use these near death experiences to build on his visual appearance, so the left illustration is a diagram of battle-scars he accumulated over the course of his adventures.

A more grown up version of this character can be seen here: [link]

on a random note, besies the anatomy, evolve out the costume further. If this is a reckless bastard make him look like it. Right now his appearence is clean...perhaps tattoo's bizarre surface piercings, intermingled dreadlocks... just get some beer and a spare sketchbook and go crazy.

First off-its a neat concept. Dont care much for the one on the left. Reminds me of an old Wolverine costume.
Best crit I can give is to go buy yourself(if you haven't already) a copy of the Burne Hogarth Dynamic Anatomy. Study it and copy the illustrations.
The most "off" part is the abdomen area. And this is because of lack of familiarity with human anatomy. Regardless of style or exaggeration good anatomy knowledge is key for any painting or drawing.
The strongest part of this drawing is that it is clear that you know what you want to see on the page.

Thanks man, that is good constructive critisism

I am actually aware of the anatomy problem, and I remember back in the early 90s when I drew this, one of my signature features was that I would always "invent" new muscles to fill out a drawing.

The Wolverine observation is also something i can totally relate to, as my inspiration back then were mostly super heroes.

I was not aware of the book you mentioned, and it sounds interesting. I will deffinitly look into that

yeah he wore a similar costume, notably with those "tiger" stripes on the legs and arms back during a time when the x-men were into dimensional travel. They had to pass a test in which each enemy was progressively more difficult. The first one named Jaff I think, was small with purple skin and a white mohawk. He kicked everyones ass.
Anyways...
What are you doing with your art these days? I was under the assumption that the elf was a current drawing.

The drawing is old, the coloring is recent.

Mostly I'm catching up on technique these days. I kind of almost stopped drawing in the mid 90s, and for the last 10 years I've been a software developer only doing the occasional design when time permits it.

I got back into, and starting making time for actually drawing again this summer, while I was visiting my childhood home, and I'm currently making stuff for a game idea I have. Part of this process is to finish developing some of my old characters.

The next step I'm taking with my art is a painting, merging this sketch [link]

...with this background [link]

(Modulization is a habit I've picked up in programming)

Feel free to comment on those as well I'm currently contemplating how to properly costume the sketch before painting it.

Honestly I dont think it would work. Perspectives are different and most importantly one is finished while the other is only in sketch mode.
Keep them separate IMO.
Continue the sketch and plan a background. Think about where this rider is, his life, why and/or how he is where he is.
ThEn paint it.
