Description floatin’ in the river orleans

inspired by the modest mouse song ‘the devil’s workday’ found on their ‘good news for people who love bad news’ album, back when i thought the line “floatin’ in the river are lost” was “floatin’ in the river orleans”. I’d love to visit new Orleans some day.

edit: i did this picture a long time before hurricane katrina happened. so any similarities are just a coincidence... and i feel i should re-iterate, this picture is not suppose to represent any place on earth, it was just a visual interpretation i made, when i realized that i had misunderstood a line in a song i liked at the time.

Hope ya be able to make it here, son. The dead bodies remided me of katrina though.... You'd find dead bodies lots of places before they were pcked up and identified.
Just a word of advice: If you go on Bourbon street, use the BUDDY SYSTEM!! 0.0
Same for Canal, but that's only for nights.

I realize that you drew this before the horrible events, but in retrospect it does seem oddly appropriate.

Interesting and terrifying considering the sorta recent tragedy down there. The people though.. they're white. What's up with that?

they're not white. nor are they representing anyone of any race. they're just objects (to put it loosely) in the background. they're all coloured the same colour: a lighter tone of the main background colour which is green.

Yeah, I realized that when I took a closer look. But all the people that you know floating in the river are lost.

Although it is Modest Mouse. It might be "logs".

That song makes me think of the members of Modest Mouse dressed as creepy cajun dudes with banjoes and jugs marked "XXX" implying that it is the sexiest booze of all time. They'd play the song from rocking chairs while Isaac Brock threw puppies into a freezer.

I'm pretty sure it's Logs. when I gave it some thought, it kind of scared me. I imagined what it would be like if all the human bodies were to float on down to the devil's logging camp to be made into fire wood, with all that implies. The trumpet reminds me of a scream, and the words " I could buy myself a reason, I could sell myself a job, I could hang myself for treason, I am my own damn God" makes me think of Hell. Delightfully creepy song.

It kind of reminds me of Oingo Boingo during their "Mystic Knight" years.

Remember, when they played old swing music, and Danny would wear a devil costume?

This makes me think of them singing in the Forbidden Zone night club.

Hello...
I was wondering if you would be interested in having this or another piece published in an Art Book benefit for Hurricane Katrina victims.

You would retain all rights to the piece and all proceeds from the book (which will be sold at cross-country independent bookstores, galleries, coffee shops, and venues) will go to the Red cross & the Salvation Army.

If you're interested, please let me know at calltoaction2005@gmail.com and view our website at [link]

Thanks and good luck with your art work!

Hello right back!

Well, if you think this piece is appropiate for the book, I'd be more than happy to have this piece published in a book.
I actually didn't see the connection before, until just then. I drew this piece back in March, and of course with recent events this is pretty eerie-ly similiar...
