Merry Christmas!This year I was selected to do a painting for ~nightmareah !
I have to say, I enjoyed working on this. The angle was hard, but I managed to muddle through somehow without a reference. I wish you could see the hooves better (I spent time on them without remembering they'd be hidden
). The background was a reach, but with a reference picture, the clouds turned out to be easier than expected. More backgrounds on the way! 
I chose Phantom to feature in this, because what's more beautiful than a golden horse in a golden sunset? That said - never do sunset lighting.
Not and easy undertaking. I should've flipped it while I had the chance so I could draw the ghosty though, on Phantom's side. 
I hope I got his left side right, because I couldn't find a reference

i hate to preach the whole "practice" thing, but after being horrible at backgrounds a few deviations ago I'm a believer

WOW this is gorgeous !! First off, thanks so much for making this hehe! Last year, my ESS-ee didn't make my gift.
But ANYWAYS, I really adore your shading on Phantom, he looks so shiny, but not too shiny whereas it'll burn my eyes xD The pose is so unique, the way he's tromping down the hill while watching the pretty sky 
Beautiful background, as well GAH The mountains even have the tree tip effect so you know theres trees on it. LOVE LOVE LOVE ! Little details like that make me happy =]
And you got his tattoo spot on ! It is identical on both sides, so you got it right

i'm really glad you like the way, he seems like a really complicated character and i wanted to get his expression right while maintaining his horsey-ness
and i am SO glad you like the background. i always struggle with them, but i recently remembered how to use a reference

I have that curse too, backgrounds are my weakness x.x AND I use refs!

good! you said he had an easy going temperment and it was easy to see him trotting down a hill. he's quite regal, if you ask me
that's why were horse artists, not from the Hudson River School
