Description Under the leadership of Robin Riddles, whose work with the LMS lead to his design of the War Department's 2-8-0 and 2-10-0 'Austerities', British Railways produced a range of standard classes of locomotives based off of the LMS' designs for its own standard range of motive power designed in the period between the end of World War II and the formation of BR by George Ivatt. It would come as a surprise that out of the predominantly LMS-influenced standard range, one design stands out, the Class 3. These were standard versions of the Great Western Railway's large prairies, mainly due to their boilers which were derived from the GWR Swindon No.2 boiler. Two versions were built at Swindon from 1952 to 1955, a tank and a tender engine, and of them 20 were built, while the tanks numbered 45. The tender engines, numbers 77000 to 77019, were mainly used on the Northeastern and Scottish regions, and the tanks were used on the Western, Southern, London Midland, and Northeastern Regions. The tender engines were withdrawn by 1967, and the tanks by about the same time and none were preserved, but a new Class 3 Tank, number 82045 is under construction at the Severn Valley Railway.
