Description The H16 and G16 are both branches of the Urie S15 family of designs, and both were designed specifically to work in the LSWR's new Feltham marshaling yard in West London. The H16 was a tank engine version of the S15, with an extra trailing axle to support its bunker, and its main job was to carry transfer freights around Feltham. Eastleigh Works built five of these pacific tank engines from 1921-1922 and were known as "Green Tanks." They survived into Southern Railway and later BR ownership before being all withdrawn in (Wanna take a guess?) 1962. None were preserved.
The G16 was a larger 4-8-0 tank engine, and only four were built in 1921. These huge engines were used as heavy shunters at Feltham, West London. More were planned after grouping, but this was rejected in favor of the group standard Maunsell Z class 0-8-0 tanks instead. They were the only locomotives capable of the work required of them, and as such continued on through World War II, some in rather run down condition. They were finally made redundant by diesel shunters before being withdrawn between 1959 and 1962. None of these "Black Tanks" are preserved.
