Description The LBSCR B4s were built between 1899 and 1901 by Brighton Works and Sharp Stewart to supplant Robert Billinton's B2s and replace the Stroudley B1s of 1880s vintage. These were later rebuilt by his son, Lawson Billinton, into the B4X, but only two rebuilds were completed by the grouping in 1923 and the rest were carried out by Richard Maunsell from 1923 to 1924. The B4s and B4Xs were withdrawn relatively quickly, but six originals and all twelve rebuilds survived into nationalization, but soon went by the beginning of the 1950s and none of either class were preserved.
