Description Like all good things, there is bound to be a sequel. R.J Billinton designed the E5 0-6-2s in 1902 as an improvement upon the E4 'Piano Tank' class. 30 Were built from 1902 to 1904 at Brighton Works. They had increased fuel capacity, higher power, and were faster than their smaller-wheeled predecessors. With these improvements they tallied up quite high mileages. Four were rebuilt by Marsh in 1911 with C3 boilers, making them the E5x Class, though they showed no real improvement and their higher center of gravity made for rough running at high speed. The 26 E5s and 4 E5xs survived into Southern Railway ownership in 1923. The first was withdrawn in 1936, another in 1944 after a collision, but the rest made it through into Nationalization, but not for long as 2-6-4 tanks took up their work and all were gone by 1956. None are preserved today.
