Description 1943 Ford GPW

One of those seldom heard facts - what you see here is a Ford Jeep.  While it's common knowledge Ford made Jeeps during World War II, many folks don't know that it's Ford who designed the trademark slatted grill.  Willys modified it down to seven slats so they could trademark it.

That seven-slat grill is so important to Jeep's identity that they (unsuccessfully) tried to sue General Motors over using it on the Hummer.  Of course, since the Hummer was manufactured by American Motors General, who owns the trademark along with Chrysler... that went nowhere.

So....Jeep tried to sue the company that makes Jeeps...so that they could take money...from themselves?

First-class logic right there man.

Not quite.  AM General (the A & M stand for American & Motors ) was part of American Motors Corporation (who owned Jeep).  When Chrysler bought AMC, AMC and AM General both had the rights to the unique grill.  So AM General extended those rights to Chrysler as well.  AM General started marketing the civilian Hummer in 1992, but eventually they sold out that part to General Motors, who really pushed selling them with the H1, H2, H3.....and I'm sure they eventually would've gotten to the H7 (an Aveo rebadge) at the rate they were going.  So Chrysler sued General Motors (but not AM General) for trademark infringement.  As you can guess that didn't go far.

Trademarks are something a lot of lawyers make a lot of money on.
