Also, does that inspection sticker really say 94?

Yes it does - for both of them.Β  The Escort appears to be October '94 and the Lynx December '94.Β  I told you they've been there for quite some time...

Poor dears weren't even 10 years old...
On the plus side, that probably means they've got relatively low mileage... But on the down side, that's 20 freakin' years of sitting.

I noticed "diesel" was painted on that building at one point. Β If you tell me that either one of these is a diesel I will drive down there right now and push them home with me.

I don't think either is a diesel though I didn't want to trespass so I took the photos from the shoulder of the road.

The half-demolished building used to be a garage/gas station.Β  Both cars were apparently stored in there for years until demolition started and they were dragged outside.Β  Then they stopped the demolition halfway through (no clue why) and everything has been sitting as you see it for years.

Less rust on this little hatch than on some of the much newer cars I see cruising the roads on a daily basis... Β I bet you could get it running with minimal effort

Save it and put this sticker on it!Β www.bumperstickerz.com/images/…

There's a Citroen Traction Avant in my city, which has the license plate frame with text "Old, but paid for!".

There's something to be said about not having car payments. Β  Still, at this point a Traction Avant is an antique and well beyond the beater stage I'd expect to see such a plate onΒ - is it still a daily driver?

Well, maybe not a typical daily driver... I see it usually at some car shows, but once I've seen in running like a normal car.

Awww. I'll say it needs service poor thing!

Still, all things considered it's intact.Β  Not many cars that have been sitting out in the open, abandoned, as long as these two escape vandals...

How long have they been there?

SwiftysGarage In reply to savannaslew [2014-09-16 02:07:21 +0000 UTC]

The last inspection sticker on them both is 1994.Β  They've been outside for at least five years, probably longer.

Wow, 20 years they are in remarkable shape for sitting that long.

SwiftysGarage In reply to savannaslew [2014-09-17 04:44:40 +0000 UTC]

A good chunk of that was inside the garage so they've only been exposed to the elements the last five years or so.Β  That's helped more than anything, I'd imagine.Β  Aside from the dented rear fender, the Escort looks to be in much better shape than the much rarer Lynx (which has a surprising amount of lower body rust for a car that was on the roads less than nine years, tops, if the inspection sticker is anything to go by).

Mechanically, though... that's another story entirely.Β  Sitting that long isn't good for a car.Β  Anything rubber's most likely rotted, the batteries are long since dead, and I shudder to think whatΒ any fluids remaining in the car look like now...

Fluids? You mean sludge and glue right?

At this point, yes.
