I really like these, the '71-'73 hearses & ambulances! They balance out the insane width by adding length AND adding height. While not as muscle-car as the coupes and sedans, these ambulances are better balanced aesthetically. Not to mention all the increases in ride quality, cargo space! These ambulances are second only to beloved '59-'64s.
Whereas the stacked headlight ambulances are pretty but kinda weird too. There's just so much vertical going on. The pure hearse/combos are perfect though; they don't have all that increased vertical styling/roof adornments so you don't get too much vertical styling cues. It's all nice and perfectly balanced.

Yep, I have a VHS of old 1960's and 1950's Ohio State highway patrol film reels. The ambulances were indeed hearses, but back in those days a car crash would mean you were too dead to need an ambulance at all.

That's also true - crash testing was in its infancy and well, cars weren't designed to be safe, they were designed to look good enough to sell but still be cheap enough to produce.

Well seatbelts and saftey glass windscreens were a help too.

Maybe it's because these were phased out before I was born, but... ...I think I'd be a bit paranoid if I called for an ambulance and a hearse showed up.
Still, these are majestic automobiles, much better looking (if less functional) than the vans that replaced them.
