A gas hog, according to the owner.   I might add that this was driven from New York to Pennsylvania, and likely on interstate highways.  Speaking of which, I got a shot of a blue one a month ago cruising on Interstate 78 at roughly 70 MPH.  I can upload it as proof if needed?

I'd say no.  Not common due to their age, but certainly not rare.  I saw one on the highway a month ago.  And if you go to any campground in the country you're almost guaranteed to see at least one.
