Background Info

Personality:
extraverted | confident | boisterous | sarcastic | arrogant | hyperactive | loud

Raisei is kind of a loud, life of the party, type person. He’s very friendly, and loves to meet new people, but can be a bit full of himself; thinking everyone would obviously want to be friends with him. Overall, he’s just a bit of a himbo.

Bio:

Raisei is relatively young for a raijū and has spent the majority of his life in the Skyrealm with other yokai native to the realm. Like most raijū, he was born with a natural affinity for storms and spent the majority of his childhood learning the basics of reading, writing, and other basic life skills, while spending every free second he could of stormy weather being one of those crackles of lightning that just flash in the sky without ever touching down.

The first time Raisei was old enough and strong enough to ride a bolt of lightning to a full touchdown on the earth, he got a glimpse of the nightlife of Tokyo and immediately became enamored with bright lights, bustling streets, and vibrant music. His love of the human’s culture rapidly formed into… an issue to say the least. Despite constantly being told not to, he’d often wander into human cities and cause a commotion with his appearance. Due to his problematic behavior, and to help quell some of his curiosity, he was introduced to the Raijin temple where he met a young monk named Ryotaro who would become his friend and teach him much about human culture.

Even with his visits with Ryotaro feeding him new information, Raisei’s childlike wonder and curiosity was never quite quelled completely. Ryotaro introduced him to dancing, music, and playing the shamisen; attempting to preoccupy the young yokai with activities. As their friendship grew, Ryotaro even helped Raisei a bit with being able to interact with things more, gifting him with a special pair of blessed gloves that would allow him to touch things without shocking them to all hell. Even as Ryotaro aged into an old man though, Raisei would still occasionally try to ride the storms down to earth and interact with humans, just wanting to party and play really. Sadly coming down from a lightning strike… not the best way to meet people without scaring them. In recent years though, he almost made a game out scaring one particular storm chaser, deciding this poor man was another of his new friends.

The Academy:
Just like he normally would during a storm, Raisei was riding lightning bolts up and down through the sky. One he was riding happened to strike one of those metal public mailboxes that you occasionally see on the side of the road. To nobody’s surprise, the mailbox was destroyed and most of the mail inside was then on fire.

Funny enough though, one particular letter was unharmed and surprisingly had his name on it. Raisei opened the letter and found it was an invite to a magical academy, which sounded like fun to him, so he accepted.

Ability Info

Species:
Raijū

Raijū are a species of yokai that are said to be the embodiment of lightning in an animal form. They live in the Skyrealm, and ride lightning bolts down to the earth during storms, creating chaos and destruction wherever they land.

In Raisei’s reality, the truth of the matter is that raijū are born from the lightning, and seek to play and interact with humanity. Sadly, due to their inherent powers and nature, they inadvertently end up causing destruction wherever they go. Especially in ancient Japan, when many buildings were built out of wood, and clustered closely together, a lightning strike could destroy a large area very rapidly.

Abilities:

  • Ride the Lightning - raijū are all capable of riding lightning bolts down to earth from the sky, and back up into the sky from the ground. This ability actually allows them to travel along any electrical current. When doing this, they become one with the electricity itself, massively increasing the voltage traveling through whatever electrical current they are traveling along. This travel is at the speed of lightning itself, around roughly 270,000 mph
    • Cloud Walking - when a raijū travels back up into the sky, they can transport themselves through storm clouds as if it where electricity or lightning
    • Call Lightning - during a lightning storm, raijū are capable of basically calling for a ride, being able to call a lightning bolt to strike them
  • Lightning Generation/Manipulation - raijū are capable of limited control over lightning. They can generate lightning bolts from their body, and control electricity in a 15ft. radius around themselves.
  • Shocking Touch - due to their natural electrical energy, raijū are constantly charged with static electricity, and will shock anyone they touch much like a joy buzzer.
  • Yokai Form - Raisei is capable of transforming into his natural yokai form at will. He has only a few different abilities in that form.
    • Speed - while in yokai form, a raijū can run up to 50mph
    • Claws & Teeth - while in yokai form, raijū have sharp fangs and claws
  • Electricity Immunity - as creatures of lightning themselves, raijū are immune to injury or shock from any electrical source

Weaknesses:
  • Ride the Lightning - while raijū can travel along electrical currents, they tend to destroy any electronics they do this to, typically frying the circuits and melting the wires. Power lines are about the only piece of modern technology they can safely travel through.
    • No Passengers - while traveling through electrical currents, lightning, or clouds, a raijū can only take themself and cannot take any passengers along with them
    • Cloud Walking - raijū can only travel through storm clouds, and regular clear white clouds block their path through the sky. Thus, they cannot use this ability at all if it is not storming outside, or if there is no lightning to take them up into the clouds.
    • Call Lightning - even during a storm, if there is just rain, but no lightning, then a raijū will be unable to call down lightning
    • Falling - if a raijū is traveling through the clouds, and through some phenomena the clouds suddenly become clear instead of stormy, they will fall out of the sky and likely die from the fall
  • Lightning Generation/Manipulation - any lightning generated by a raijū that goes outside their 15ft. radius of control behaves as normal lightning does. It will try to ground itself as soon as possible, and is generally attracted to taller and/or metallic objects.
  • Shocking Touch - much like their problem with electronics while riding electrical currents. Raijū cannot make use of computers, phones, etc. without completely frying and destroying the object. In order to do so, they require special enchanted rubber gloves that insulate things they touch from their inherent electrical charge.
  • Yokai Form - the disadvantage of using his yokai form over his humanoid form for Raisei, is that in his yokai form, he cannot speak in anything other than barks and growls. In addition, he does not have opposable thumbs in his yokai form.
    • No Canine Senses - even in yokai form, Raisei's senses stay the same and are not enhances or changed while in yokai form
  • Ofuda & Omamori Talismans - a paper, wood, cloth, or metal talisman from a shinto or buddhist temple designed for protection can be used as protection against a raijū. Raijū cannot touch these talismans themselves at all, and must have somebody else remove them in order to get past them.
    • No Touching - raijū cannot touch anyone who has such a talisman on their person. If they even attempt to do so, they will be stopped as if hitting an invisible wall once they are within 5ft. of the talisman.
    • Power Negation - a raijū’s ability to generate and manipulate lightning can be nullified by one of these talismans. Their lightning will simply arc around anyone bearing a talisman, leaving the talisman wielding unharmed.
    • Do Not Enter - if such a talisman is placed on the entrance to a building, a raijū cannot physically enter that building, and will be stopped as if hitting an invisible wall.
    • Bad Dog - while a raijū cannot willingly come closer to somebody holding a talisman, such talisman bearers can approach them. In such a case, if a talisman is physically placed on the raijū, they will be forced into their yokai form, but unable to use any of their powers.
  • Sucker for a Pretty Face - Raisei is very easily distracted by people he finds attractive, and is extremely susceptible to manipulation by them.
  • Oblivious - being from the Skyrealm, Raisei is oblivious to many parts of human culture, and is not aware of many social protocols, laws, traditions, etc.
  • Insulated Material - this includes rubber, wood, and other such non-conductive materials. That amount of insulating material is very important though. For instance, you can protect yourself from a raijū giving you a static shock with rubber gloves, but those rubber gloves will just melt when faced with a lightning strike.
  • Disease, Weapons, etc. - just like a human would be, raijū are susceptible to disease, being hit by a car, being shot, etc. and will be just as harmed as a normal human or dog would be.

Friends:

  • Ren Sato - a human Japanese business man whose hobby is storm chasing. Raisei noticed him once during a storm, and has since ridden the lightning of several storms Ren has watched. While Ren may not consider the yokai his friend, Raisei enjoys scaring Ren by appearing during storms
  • Monk Ryotaro - an elderly monk who oversees the Raijin temple in the mountains where Raisei is from. Also the same monk who gave him his blessed gloves.
  • Tet - a strange woman with bright green eyes who checked on Raisei after he crashed into the mailbox. She ushered him away from the onlookers before he could cause a scene and they had dinner. He thinks she’s mysterious, but would like to see her again

Relationship Status: single

Sexual Orientation:
Raisei doesn’t like to define his sexuality. If pressed, he identifies as a polyamorous omnisexual.

Physical Appearance:
While in humanoid form, Raisei is a tall thinly built man with charcoal coloured skin, horns, and pointed elf-like ears. His eyes have a black sclera and a blue iris. He also seems to have a blue lightning-like pattern that moves about underneath his skin like crackling electricity, and a gathering of black storm clouds that seem to cling to him.

While in his true yokai form, Raisei resembles a large black wolf with the head of an eastern style dragon, and two tails. His fur in this form crackles occasionally with electricity, and his eyes remain the same as in his humanoid form.
