Description Well, well well...there's actually meaning behind this one! My friend Tyler asked me to do an illustration based off of the Johnny Cash song, "God's Gonna Cut You Down." The song itself is pretty much about sinners being cut down and there is a need to call for repentance. I actually didn't want to pinpoint the sinner, but the sin itself (love the sinner, hate the sin sort of deal). Considering that Johnny Cash had a problem with drugs and recovered, I drew a figure crowched despairingly upon a soap box, because even those who preach repentance aren't perfect. The storm coming down upon the figure is turmoil, pains and sins that he has brought upon himself through his choices. He has his hand stretched out before him into the sunlight. One side of the piece is dark and gloomy, while the other is colorful and full of life.

I first had an image to show God striking down sinners, but I know God loves us all, and I ended up not liking that idea. It was too harsh. We are humbled enough when we go through seriously painful things, even if we bring them upon ourselves. So in the design, I wanted to portray this person who is at an all time low because of sin, but is reaching into the light because God cuts down our sins, but turns right around and helps us heal. Its interesting that the other song that inspired me while I was doing this was "The Healing" from the Lady In the Water soundtrack. Excellent. You should check it out.

Anyway, that's the jist of it all.

Another perfect illustration

May I ask? Are the watercolors for real and the linework added later in the program?

Thanksss! Umm, how I did it was I sketched the outlines with good ol' paper and pencil, then scanned it in to Photoshop and added the stamp filter to it to make the outlines pure black and a bit rough. Then I took a separate piece of water color paper and blotted in the colors w/ real watercolor and used a print out of the outlines to pretty much tell where I should be putting the colors. Then I just scanned the colors in and made the outline layer so it was 'multiplied' and put the color layer underneith it. Does that make sense? If it doesn't feel free to ask me any questions about the process. So yeah, the watercolor is real, and the lines are real, only scanned in and with a filter on it.

np. 'stamp' should be under the filters tab, then go down to sketch, then stamp is there. or should be. I've got PS CS, so maybe its not.

you'll do soo good in art! just think...what if i never drew you little comics when i used to babysitt you? would you ever have been into art as much? I knew those comics were there for a reason...

Oh, and yeah - with the reds and oranges in the clouds and stuff, that's a part of art that you learn - that you need repetition of color and lines, so I have red in the bottom left corner, but to make it balanced and pleasing, and so that the red in the corner won't overtake everything, you add a bit throughout the rest of the pic. Once you learn the rules, you can pretty much just use them like second nature, and occasionally break them. And that is my art lecture for the day.

i know, your comics really help~! man i cant wait to learn that trick! I LOVE ART! I was the only one in the class today who wanted to make a job outta art. Everyone else just did it as a fun thing((which i also did!)) or they were just placed there. it makes me so mad cuz my friend is in that class and he hates art and so i keep telling him to get oputta it so he can get in a class he would like better but hes not listening to me! man i have got to call you sometime so i can tell you all the weird and new things about highschool and stuff~
