For a few golds, they could have rented some horses, but the mage needed that Tome of Magic.
While they were slogging through the mud in the punishing heat and humidity, she realized that she had that exact same tome at home. With a shrug, she decided not to say anything if she did not want to be stuck with arrows or worse.
Of course such secrets rarely stay secret for long.
