Personality:
{Composed | Intuitive | Lonely | Persevering | Unforgiving | Mysterious }
{Composed} Perhaps surprising considering his lineage, Coud is a very calm cat. He inherited none of his mother's fiery passion, nor his father's volatile nature. Rather, growing up, he seemed to draw a lot of his peace from his best friend, Kyle; with his shy companion's timid nature, Coud was always the one who had to take charge and seek out the adventure, but he also had to have a gentle paw when handling his companion. Having become quite talented at maintaining patience and exuding contentment, it is now very difficult for him to lose his temper or enter a situation or state of mind where he cannot keep a level head.
{Intuitive} Another trait learned from his time with Kyle, the crafter has a certain degree of empathy that lends him uncanny insight to the feelings or thoughts of his company. Whether it's a skill at reading body language, reading into a cat's words, or simply reading their nature and interpreting it, Coud is good at understanding those he interacts with. It's important to note that this isn't a conscious effort on his part; these instincts simply come to him, and he takes them in good faith, going with the flow in the fashion of his tribe's namesake. If attention is called to his perceptiveness, he may become embarrassed and try to discredit himself. In all cases, he attempts to use this to the benefit of others.
{Lonely} A recently developed trait, Coud has begun to feel the weight of his losses. While he does not lose himself in the grief of the deaths of his family members, he does still miss them desperately, and often looks to the stars to seek their silent counsel. However, this is not what has brought on these feelings most severely. Rather, it's the departure of his close friends from the tribelands that has caused these deeper scars. Dreams plague him of Kyle walking away-- his figure moving from the familiar apprentice, to an older version of himself, and then the mysterious adult that he has now become in Coud's mind; always walking away, eventually out of sight, and out of Coud's life for good. Other cats have begun to join him; Sanguis, Warrun, Vitani, Perseus, even Kintsu and Lully have made appearances in his dreams, all leaving him behind. It frightens him to death that one day he will lose everyone he loves-- not to Eden, but to some unreachable place where even death will not reunite them. It has subconsciously affected his ability to become very close to any new friends he makes.
{Persevering} Through all of his losses, Coud has remained true to himself. Nothing can waver the love in his heart, change the compassionate way he regards others. And above all, nothing can break his will. This trait ties in closely with his faith and kindness, helping him to rise above grief and continue living a happy life. He does not deny himself the time to mourn the dead and gone, but neither does he let it affect the living and present. There is nothing he can do for those in Eden, save let them rest in peace, and those who have departed from the tribelands are out of his reach, for now. Some might say that Coud is near-sighted in the way he leads his life, and this may be true to a degree, but it is certainly a self-afflicted lifestyle. Those beyond the hills are never far from his thoughts, nor are the souls of those he's lost to the skies. But rather than spend time yearning for them, he focuses on those around him now, and chooses to wait until he is among those he misses to concentrate on loving them.
{Unforgiving} While typically a very open-minded and selfless cat, there is one thing that does not come easily to Coud. If someone proves themselves capable of doing dreadful things, then it becomes a part of who they are; their actions define them, and the decisions they make are absolute. For the most part, it is difficult to do something bad enough to get onto Coud's radar, but any negative gestures against his loved ones-- his sister, his friends-- is a one-way trip to his bad books. Even if those that were wronged will forgive a cat, it's unlikely that Coud will forget their transgression, and will rarely trust them not to do something again in the future. Where his loved ones are concerned, he can be a very harsh individual.
{Mysterious} Air-headed. That's what they called him as a kitten. As an apprentice, he was a scatterbrained; as an adolescent, he was a daydreamer. But now, it's evolved into something more. As an adult, his peculiar, secretive nature conjures rumours of his time spent alone, or his relationships with other cats, or his plans for the future. Even though, for the most part, Coud is an open book, the answers he provides can sometimes only prove to bring up more questions. There is no doubt in his mind that someday he will rejoin Kyle; but when that will be, how he will find his friend, are questions he has no answers to, and furthermore he never doubts his own loyalty to his tribe despite his unwavering plan. His faith in the Spirits is a peculiar topic to breach; they are flawed, and their ways are imperfect, but he believes in them, and while he would never harm others in their name, he does not resent his mother-- or the Spirits-- for her death. But more than that, it's the distant look that comes to his eyes, the way he can be found sitting alone and staring into space, how he can often be seen lost deep in his thought. What he's thinking about is the mystery-- a mystery, it seems, even he doesn't have the answer to.
History:
{First Moons}
Snow was born in Fire Tribe to the Silver-Fire, Tzurai, and her mate, Nobuo, in a litter of five. Since their litter was in the nursery at the same time, Tzurai's and Eva's kits interacted quite a bit. Of the two litters, a small gang would emerge; Snow, his sister Speckle, and his best friend Cerul soon became an inseperable trio. They did everything together, from suffering their mothers' baths, to chasing bugs, to even breaking the rules. If one of them was guilty of or praised for something, the other two weren't far behind. On one night that would prove to haunt Snow for the rest of his life, he and Cerul made a promise to explore the world together.
During the months in the nursery, Snow had several random nights spent sleepless by nightmares . On the nights that these afflicted him, he would often sneak into the Yellow-Fire's den and doze there until dawn, when he would return to the nursery and sleep until sun-high. It took some convincing, but Castail had finally permitted these - only occasionally, though, and not for too long. For Snow, they had lasted just long enough for the calming scent of the deputy's den to chase off the remnants of his bad dreams.
The Ceremony of Light was equally the best and worst day of Snow's young life. His sharp blue eyes were bright when the Water-Tribe tattoo appeared on his shoulder. The excitement faded from them as his sister received the rune of earth - and further more as the same mark emerged on Cerul's hackle.
"Take care of him," Snow had whispered desperately, eyes pleading.
"I will." The siblings had stared at each other until Cerul had returned, his embrace to Snow immediate. It was the first time life had cheated him.
{Ice}
Water Tribe welcomed him, yet continued to regard him warily. With that fur, those eyes-- there was no mistaking his father, the tom that had wrought so much havoc on them. In hopes of keeping him under control, as well as ensuring the blame of his revolt should it come would fall to none of her cats, Vitani took on the task of mentoring him. Despite his great excitement at this prospect, Coud knew that it wasn't just because he showed potential, or that she wanted him to prove himself. She didn't want him to hurt anyone else. The more time he spent in Water Tribe, the more alienated he felt.
{Petals and Feathers}
Meeting Xander by chance one day while trying to make a flower petal necklace for Vitani, Coud found an unlikely friend in the gruff tom. The short time they spent together brought Coud a friend in his own tribe, and he's done his best not to let his anxiety about his lineage get in the way of trying to be happy. As proof of this friendship, Xander gave him one of the feathers from his tail; in honor of his companion, Coud has put it in a similar place.
{Remember}
A day spent with his best friend , after three months of not seeing him, might have been the best day he'd had in a long time. Just seeing Cerul-- now Kyle-- made him feel much better. Despite Xander's faith in him, it was still proving difficult to completely ignore the looks he got from his tribemates.
During their games, Kyle took a moment to give his necklace to Coud. As he had made it himself, Coud found himself almost jealous of his friend's craftmanship-- yet couldn't manage it, instead finding himself only impressed and honored to be given the skull. The flower Coud had tucked behind Kyle's ear paled in comparison to this gift, but they both wore them proudly.
Unknown to Coud, this was Kyle's final farewell. When they parted ways, the Earth Triber had no intention of ever seeing him again.
A nightmare tore Coud from his slumber. The Breathing Caldera, the last place he had seen Kyle, called to him. Something was wrong .
Coming across his friend in the midst of leaving was earth-shattering. Despite initial turmoil, the friends managed to curb what seemed to be an impending argument. Coud knew Kyle couldn't stay in the tribes; he wasn't happy. Their promise rang through his mind; that they would explore the world together. There was no doubt in his mind that tonight they would leave together.
It could only have been Kyleto dissuade him, and he did. Nothing could shake Coud from the certainty that one day, he would leave the tribes and find his best friend. They would fulfill their vow. Kyle didn't try to talk him out of it; he wanted it just as much as Coud did.
Until sunrise, they sat together; Coud struggling with his grief, and Kyle's heart warming at what he had thought he had lost; hope for the future.
A formal farewell was no way for Coud to say goodbye to his friend. While Kyle's figure faded into the distance, he called one last time that they would see the world together.
You promised!
{Feelings of Blue}
The enthusiasm had drained from his body. His energetic behavior had faded. Every day, Coud thought of his friend, and how he'd lost him-- how he should have gone with him. Such a sudden loss, like nothing he'd ever felt before-- a hundred times worse than when they were sent to different tribes-- it broke his spirit. Despite all attempts at anyone to talk to him, he wouldn't explain why; he'd simply smile and say that it wasn't forever. He knew the impact would eventually lose its sting, and and that he'd be able to look forward to the future, when he'd see Kyle again.
Yet for so long, all he could think about is how far away that day truly was.
{Threshold}
Facing such a loss made him resolute; though he remained friendly, Coud became more dedicated to his ambitions. Soon he would be an adolescent, and he would be more than halfway to adulthood. How long could he stand to make Kyle wait? How long until he felt ready to depart and find his friend?
Not now. When news came to Water Tribe of the caimans, Coud hid his presence and heard first-hand from the messenger of the scaled terrors. While Vitani told the tribe of the new foe, he listened with silence and gathered all he could know. Then, on the first chance he got, he departed for the Council of the Spirits. He had to find his sister.
{Feelings of Green}
Throughout his adolescence, Coud studied dutifully under Lully, though never demanded much of his mentor's time. He learned quickly, and his dexterity was honed until handling even the smallest of gems and petals came with ease to his paws. Many nights and days he spent alone, however, watching the stars from Flower Fields and having little to no interaction with his tribe or friends. Though, during these times of loneliness, he rediscovered a companion that he had known only fleetingly - if fondly - during his apprenticeship; Kintsu. Learning that his friend had become deputy came as a surprise to Coud, but he found himself proud of the other's young promotion.
Even so, there seemed to be discontent from the other tom. The more time they spent together, however, the calmer he seemed to grow, until finally he revealed that it was these responsibilities and the expectations laid on him that had unsettled him so. It bothered Coud that anyone could look at Kintsu and see anything but the friend he'd grown so fond of, and he said so; the colour of his tattoo did not make him older or wiser than his years or experiences. They were the same age, yes, and though Coud respected him as a deputy, he still loved him as a friend first and foremost.
Evidently relieved for one relationship not to have changed, Kintsu continued to let Coud drag him into the Pheasant Woods for long, meaningless conversations and games.
After graduating, they came to see less of each other; Kintsu occupying his time with a she-cat, which Coud only encouraged, and Coud... returning to himself. This time, however, the lonliness did not come back; instead, he felt driven to contribute and to work, and has been producing many accessories from his camp, occasionally giving them to his companions and even strangers he comes across in the neutral lands.
{Remember...}
Kintsu's mate-- his sister. It took him a while to find out who his friend's special she-cat was, but when he did, he was happy to learn that they both shared this close bond with the flame-point. But this was not a happy chapter of his life.
Maika died. Aven died. Aster died. Nuri died.
They all died. One by one their names found him through the tribes, and he felt the weight over his heart increase. The pain was more than he'd ever known-- more than when his mother threw herself into the volcano, more than when Sanguis disappeared. So much, all at once-- even he couldn't handle it. And he had no one to talk to-- no Maika to tell that she had to buck up and keep her head high, because she was stronger than the world gave her credit for. No big sister to convince himself that everything would be alright through. He lost them all.
And then Perseus left. The horror of hearing his friend's words-- his friend, who his heart had ached for, who had caused feelings in him he had never felt before, never to this degree, never when he knew what they were-- was unbearable. It was happening again . And he almost broke. Watching Perseus and Julian walk away, he almost snapped. Almost followed them.
Finding his way to Fire Tribe, to the deputy's den that used to smell of Castail and used to soothe his nightmares and used to feel like home, Coud had wept. It had proven more than he could bear. Kintsu found him there, followed his cries, and joined him. The loss of his mate gave him a sharp empathy to his friend, and they poured their sorrows out together that night.
{Rising Up}
There's so much he still has to do. The feather that remain hidden away in his nest; the nieces and nephews he wants to watch grow into adults; the strangers he has yet to meet.
Coming out from his time of grief, Coud is emerging from a coccoon that has kept him withdrawn and reserved for many months. Accessories are being crafted-- not with vigor, but with care, and are being meticulously prepared for special cats.
