Description Robot! (This is the model for the robots in Cognition.)

This is actually my first ever character model.

Color is added by a shader in-game depending on the robot's destination (hence the lack of color). Although I like this gray version.

~1k polys, 512x512 diffuse

3ds Max and Photoshop, as usual.

Thanks Also, you get mega-props from me for listing X3TC as one of your favorite games, wish there were more North Americans familiar with it.

I agree. It's a very cool game. very detailed. I'm actually trying to make some new ships for the game. Check out my "Moldy Crow WIP" on my DA page. I have other concepts as well; I just need the time to get down to it.

I haven't really been active over there since TC went gold, but I would be surprised if the modding community on the Egosoft forums wasn't as vibrant as ever, with plenty of advice for newcomers. That's actually where I got my start, working on XTM for Reunion, so its a place close to my heart

It's true. They've helped me out quite a bit. I'm still trying to figure out how to correctly place cameras, turrets, guns, etc.

You should make a comeback to the forums every now and then, just to see what's up...

I used to drop by every once in a while, too busy to really bother these days. I still talk to a couple of the XTM/TC guys occasionally though.

Fair enough. What did you do for XTM, by the way? I know a lot of the ATF and Terran ships were adapted from XTM for X3TC. Maybe I've flown one of your ships.

Ha! You've definitely seen my work, I was one of the XTM guys who also worked on TC. I didn't do any of the actual models beyond some station kitbashes, but I did pretty much every scenefile for every new ship and station in TC I also did all the stuff for all of the new weapons, all of the particle trails, a couple of the sector backgrounds, and some other stuff.

(I'm going to PM you the rest, since this no longer has anything to do with your robot...)

Thanks I was hoping I would find the time to do a high-res character at some point as my first one, but this guy managed to get there first. Thanks for the fave as well.

Will probably be something covered in power armor Have too many projects going already though, so it probably won't be any time soon.

I like the shader you used.

Syklon In reply to DigitalFear [2010-02-11 08:22:59 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. Its the built-in Ink and Paint shader (or something like that) for 3ds Max. Replicating it in-game has been the hard part.

What engine are you using for the game?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Syklon In reply to DigitalFear [2010-02-11 19:25:49 +0000 UTC]

An engine we've written ourselves on top of the XNA framework.

Any noteworthy features? - Without compromising the secrets of your proprietary software

Syklon In reply to DigitalFear [2010-02-11 23:46:46 +0000 UTC]

Haha no, nothing overly staggering yet. Doesn't have much going on besides a couple fancy shaders, some very basic physics, and a bit of gameplay. Hopefully the coders will start making faster progress on the gameplay now that I've taken over shader/graphics code writing duty. Still, only so much you can do in a semester.

DigitalFear In reply to Syklon [2010-02-11 23:49:37 +0000 UTC]

If I were to get the XNA thing, which I can 'cause I'm a student - what would be the bare minimum of knowledge to get a basic game running? I'm talking; ground, little sphere that floats around, and basic interface.

[Also, best interface app other than Scaleform?]

Syklon In reply to DigitalFear [2010-02-12 00:14:15 +0000 UTC]

If you have some basic programing knowledge its very easy to get the basics like that really quick. They have a graphics pipeline in place out of the box that can handle drawing 3d models or 2d sprites with just a couple lines of code, as long as you don't want anything too fancy. There are some decent tutorials and samples to help you learn too.

No idea about the interface app thing...

Awesome; so would I be better off with XNA or Unity? [Free One]

Haven't used Unity so I can't say, though it looked like it had some nice features.

Very nice.

Oh, no. 3ds Max actually. I'm using Max's built in toon shader for rendering purposes, since that's close to the in-game look we have going.
