Airavata is the mount of the god Indra in Hindu mythology. Airavata is widely considered to be king of the elephants, and few would contest that claim, as even without acknowledging his natural powers, Airavata was granted godly gifts when he became Indra's mount. It is said that Indra rode him into the underworld after Indra defeated Vritra. Here, Airavata sucked up the water of the underworld in his many trunks, and fired it into the world above, linking the waters of 'above' and 'below'. Some believe Airavata even has powers over the weather and is able to conjure storms or clear the skies at will.
