Description Feeling all nostalgic as we count down the final days of Matt Smith's Doctor. He has been amazing. When he was cast (ever so long ago, a.k.a. 2009), I didn't know what to think. I liked Moffatt's stories and was looking forward to having him as showrunner, and he'd said he'd prefer to cast an older Doctor. And then there's this guy who's twenty-six.

Smith nailed it.

This is based on a screencap from The Day of the Doctor, right as the Curator (Tom Baker!!) leaves. I 'capped it myself off iTunes. I gotta say, the cinematography for Day of the Doctor was beautiful. This image in particular had perfect lighting.

I chose this picture because he's got that inner smile thing going on. Not a full-on grin, but his eyes are sparkling and his lips are twitching and it's the suppressed smile that's in danger of turning into a laugh. It's just so happy. That's what I liked best about the episode: the happy ending.

Full disclosure: I started this by tracing the screencap. Tracing always feels like cheating, though it's a perfectly legit technique. One I'd got the shape down, and the rough position of everything, I used the screencap solely as a reference.

Doctor Who belongs to the BBC. Matt Smith belongs to himself. Drawn in ArtRage 4, using chalk.

Excellent work!

I ArtRage 4!! And I often need to make a basic trace in order to ensure I get the features in the right place. I don't know about you, but my eyes tend to skew everything in a diangular fashion, so that one side (the right side as you look at it) is almost always higher. I have an astigmatism uncorrected by lenses. But I know how you feel, it does feel like "cheating", but it really isn't.

I find the chalk tool disappointing because it doesn't blend naturally like chalk would (with pressure), but instead I must switch tools to blend. So I usually use the oil brush. You've done a great job with the chalk tool here

Thank you!

My astigmatism is fully and thoroughly corrected by lenses, but that doesn't stop me from getting things out of whack.

Chalk is my favorite ArtRage medium! I wonder if it has anything to do with not really doing much chalk/pastels in real life. I prefer colored pencil, and don't use the ArtRage colored pencil hardly at all. I suspect the issue is being so used to the real thing, that any drawbacks in the programming are a bit glaring.
