Description ...Storm! Yes, finally!

Taken out on the old Phone Line opal fields, Lightning Ridge N.S.W. on the 9.12.12 at 11:26pm EDST.

Okay, last night was pretty amazing by storm standards. This was a monster single cell highly active storm raging out on the plains just East of town and headed away North East. Once again I was on foot so it was about a kilometre walk out there but very much worth it.

What I soon realised is that a new storm was building directly behind me here and already highly active. I had to put in a plan to move before too long so I could walk a further two kilometres back out to the western facing opal fields to grab a bit of the sheer onslaught we were soon to receive over the coming three hours. Oh boy...

Thanks kindly sir!

These 5D's are surely worth their weight in gold (which is about what they cost anyhow lol) for this type of work.

Cheers for the comment

I trust you're smart enough to have an extra card along for just such occasions. This one is an interesting focus...kind of leads the eye.

Rest assured I surely do. Normally have two 4GIG cards ready to go, it's just the time it takes to unpack the spare and install it during a time when ideally you should be flat out taking shots. lol

Currently saving the $180 for a 32GIG CF card also as the 5D has dual card slots. That way I can run video while shooting stills. Won't miss anything that way

These turned out pretty well. I had no idea of that cloud structure at the time. It was simply too dark for me to see it.

Thanks for the kind words as always

Thanks kindly Brian

I had a good chuckle when I opened the full image to see the bolt hiding behind that darn tree

I do have a few more from this stage that are zoomed in to 35mm. I won't flood DA too much here but you will see them over the coming weeks.

I'm having a slight harddrive issue at the moment so I'm scared to put anything more on the iMac for the moment. I have folders with storm photos in that are now appearing to be blank. New 2TB backup HD on the way right now though. Once it's here I can back-up and reinstall everything clean.

I haven't even had a chance to see the photos from last night as yet. Some of those should be pretty decent. The lightning went completely nuts once again.

Boy, these storms have been truly fantastic! If it continues like this through Christmas and into January it will be a great season.

Hope all has been well sir!

Well I cant wait to see the other shots! Sucks about your HD! I'm in the same boat right now. Just ordered a new one today. Keep getting a window popping up telling me to back up my HD Immediately because its going to Crash.. And its Running Really Really Slow.. I'm not looking forward to installing all the Software again either.. But after Christmas my goal is to switch to an iMac for Photo editing only and that should help make this new drive last a long time.. So we will see how it all Rolls out!

Good Luck with the Drive and Hurry Up so we can see the other Great Shot!

Haha! Will do

These new SSD's look the business. The less moving parts to fail the better I'd say

The new iMac's are the bee's knees! My "old" 21" model has been good to me so far. A new format and OS install should cure my issue. I'll be back before you know it!

Cheers Brian

Man that is too cool! I like seeing the structure of the clouds, the bolts and the stars all at once. Well done! Should you get tired of those three or four hour storms just send them to me up here in South Dakota and I'll shoot them for you

Well done my friend

Thanks John

It was on again last night for us. A dual cored (on radar) LP storm built to around thirty miles our SW at 4:30pm and remained active and fairly stable until it started to move towards town at 11pm. The lightning was unbelievable. I'll post a few from it today -though I got nothing as close as before due to the rain being a lot heavier before the active core arrived. Still a few nice ones there though

Thanks for the comment as always

Thanks kindly, sir!

It was really unorganised here at this stage but it did mature again while I was concentrating on the second storm. I have a few snaps of this beast a bit later so I might post one.
