I still believe that this ending could have worked out in the film if the monster had been redesign by H.R. Giger

Rorschach's Journal. October 12th, 1985: Dog carcass in alley this morning, tire tread on burst stomach. This city is afraid of me. I have seen its true face. The streets are extended gutters and the gutters are full of blood and when the drains finally scab over, all the vermin will drown. The accumulated filth of all their sex and murder will foam up about their waists and all the whores and politicians will look up and shout "Save us!"... and I'll whisper "no."
Very awesome sir!

SPAAAAAACE SQUIIIIIID!
I tell you, the movie's change to the ending was the one time I thought a movie made an improvement on a story. The space squid thing kinda came out of nowhere in the book.

Nah, it was all there, it's just that it's unfilmable.

Well yeah, there were enough Chekhov's Guns alluding to it before hand, it just seemed to come out of nowhere in the sense that it didn't really match the tone of the rest of the book. For a story that had been trying to portray a more "realistic" world of superheroes, the giant squid was really comic booky.
