Description A little sneak of my cosplay from SDCC 2013.
This was one of very few nice photos I was able to receive of myself, so I'm planning on doing a photoshoot around the holidays.
I absolutely LOVE the detail and the body language from this.

Reminds me a bit of the cover to Winter Soldier #8

I based our costumes off the look of the Widow Hunt arc covers, so you're not wrong.

I did a google search and Winter Soldier is so spot on! I also love that you went with the comic catsuit rather than the movie version of Widow. Simple, yet  sleek. I didn't like the straps and other gear the movie version wore which is too clutter for  comics. The only thing I would change is the belt. The discs are too small.  If you were to remake it, i would recommend brass candle plates. They're perfectly sized and  brass which could pass as gold. Because they're small, they're evenly round shaped with holes in the center that you can link with a chain or strings and would look good worn like a hipster belt. They cost $1 or so or maybe less per a piece which is reasonable.

Thank you! I used to be a gymnast, so the comic catsuit appeals to me a bit more than the film version, it's sleeker and looks a bit nicer. I do need to get a new catsuit though, as this one is a bit old and wearing out. I like how in the recent Secret Avengers comic she has a more military style belt with dual side holsters, though. Believe it or not, the belt was the most difficult piece of the costume for me to do. I finally found two metal disc belts of almost the same size and combined them and painted them with gold leaf to get the right coppery gold tone. I do want to find some better materials though, and I hadn't thought of candle plates. That's a good idea, I'll have to look into that!

I actually like the cut patterns of this catsuit. It gives it a little more than just plain look to it. Have you thought of going with a vinyl suit because Marvel has gone way out with all their heroines wearing shiny costumes in one form or another?

I really don't like Marvel's recent decision to integrate their movie universe look into the comics. Somethings that work in movies don't necessary work in the comics and vice versa. You can be a little more colorful, flamboyant and even sexy in comics which is part of the appeal. I want Hawkeye in his purple suit and not tactical gear they saddle him with now.   Don't even get me started with  Nick Fury Jr. debacle *faceplam*.  If you start  reconning these changes into the books, you'll mess up  the established and already messed continuity even further. I say keep them separate and let them develop on their own universes at their own pace.

End of nerd rant.

I love the cut patterns of it as well, so I'm hoping I can find someone to base a pattern off of this one. It's absurdly difficult to find anyone able to make one that fits me well, I'm not sure why that is as I'm not abnormally sized in any way, just short and muscular. I actually want a shinier more metallic look, but I'm not sure if I want the PVC look because it's not as comfortable to wear at cons all day.

To each his own, I suppose, but there are definitely some things in the MCU that don't work in the comics and vice versa, as you said. I love the comics ability to have a little more freedom with colors and outfits, while I do appreciate a bit of realism and function. Such as: Widow always has weapons, and yet she rarely has a place to put them. For visual purposes, I love the sleek look, don't get me wrong, but it's nice to see a holster or utility belt once in a while. In Name of the Rose, she had an ankle holster and a knife on her other ankle, so that was great in keeping a sleek look but adding some functionality.

I love Hawkeye's purple suit, it's fantastic. I do love the writing by Fraction and that Hawkeye has his own series. As long as there's some balance, I like it. The Young Avengers I haven't read, but I like most of what I see. I think the thing about the Marvel comics universe is that there's so many realities they can alter practically anything. While this might not be a good thing, I suppose it's easy for the writers to do their own thing.

But for the movies, I like to see a little different from the comics storylines. Keeping it the same would be a bit dry, and it's fun to have some differences and artistic and creative liberties! All the more reason for why I'm extremely excited to see what unfolds in Cap 2 in the Spring.

Nerd rants can be fun!

Have you thought of black metallic spandex? I don't know how comfortable those are since nothing but sweet fluffy cotton and 30% polyester has ever touched my smooth supple skin.   It's shiny, flexible, cheaper and easier to care for than PVC I think.

There's one thing I like to see which not a lot of Widow cosplayers don't do and not a lot Marvel artists depict.. the zipped up to neck collar look. Don't get me wrong, I love cleavage as much as the next guy, but if you're going to be a spy try to look professional. You're also trying to be stealthy and not draw attention to yourself. Flashing boobs or cleavage seems counterproductive in that.  If I were not a nerd, I wouldn't saying this btw.

The question though is how much leeway in the suit do and can you have in the neck collar without eventually choking yourself in the process.

Glad they're using the Brubaker's run for Cap 2.  Though I hope we'll Cap wearing more than just the Shield Agent stealth suit. Lack of red really bothers me somehow and I hope there's a better upgrade from  his Avengers suit.  I  don't know whether they will upgrade the Widow suit, but I would like it to be more blacker for her namesake. Charcoal grey in the Avengers was a step down even from the one from IM2.

Yes, actually that's what I was looking for, and that's what my old suit was before it got worn out, haha. It's nice and breathable, and I think it feels nicer than a lot of other fabrics.

I definitely agree with you on that! There's nothing wrong with looking good in a suit, but there's a difference between showing a little skin and being completely unrealistic. If I were a Marvel character trying to be stealthy, I would definitely have my suit zipped up to the neck, unless I was doing a lot of flipping around and such, in which case having it a little lower below the neck would make it more comfortable to move. It's nice to see Widow shown with her suit zipped up all the way sometimes, rather than being absurdly low.

Going slightly off subject here, but this is a good example as I'm an equestrian. Horses with harnesses and breast collars on their saddles need them to be snug and up high enough on their shoulders/necks so that it doesn't impede their shoulder/chest movement or get uncomfortable, but if it's not loose enough for them to put their heads down without choking or raise their legs up when they're running, it's counterproductive. So, going off that, I think the suits have a balance to find there too with proper zipped-up placement, haha.

It made me so happy to hear they were using Brubaker's run for reference! I would love to see Cap in a better suit, and I'm hoping they'll do a good exploration of the effects of Avengers with him, suit included. I agree with her suit color, I'm all for artistic license, and I like seeing some differences from the comics, but I also would love to see a more comic-esque version for a movie at some point. Not sure how I feel about her hair, I guess I'll have to wait for official footage and hope it looks a bit nicer than in the set shots.

If can't have a custom made metallic spandex suit, there's also wet look lycra suits as a alternative. Not sure those can be custom made for specifications, but I think the material looks maybe as good as shiny spandex and comfortable as well from I hear.

Last thing on the belt..  When she first started donning the catsuit look her disc belt was tied by hooked up in the back by 4 tubes. I think it provides a better balance or center and breaks up the monopoly of the discs. It's been part of her look for until the last 10 years when forever reason Marvel has artistically disregarded it. If you do a search for her appearances drawn by the likes of George Perez, JG Jones, Gene Colan and even Steve Epting, she does look better with them... and they all draw her with the zip collar! What are the odds?

I'm not crazy on how Scarjo's Widow has gotten shorter and shorter with each appearance. Sure, it's more practical for action sequences and not having to tangle with wearing a wig, but I always thought her classic long hair provides much of her flair and the fact that it's red provides a good contrast against her black suit.  I also think that some Widow cosplayers using the pattern from the movie version made better looking suits using better and shinier materials closer to the feel of the comic version to be honest.

The only problem most people have with the Cap suit in Avengers was the helmet. It just look bulbous and not at all flattering. I'm not sure him having open ear flaps in Cap 2 is a improvement, but we'll see.   Though I really hate how they incorporated that armor look in the comics. It may be practical, but it's just doesn't look or feel right. It's just feels cluttered. I would prefer they went with Ultimate look to minimize all that additional gear.
