Description I started this in...2009? It's now 2011 and it's actually wearable. ( bare in mind I haven't been working on this 24/7 ) It isn't finished however; I wanted to turn it into a T-shirt, but for the mean time I've kept it as this so I can wear it at Uni.

Once finished, I'll work out how many rings I've actually made. The wire is 2mm gauge galvanised steel garden wire

I also need to make a gambeson because this thing leaves chainmail pattern indents in your shoulders and chanmail patterned bruises when you're wearing a bag.

I used metal hooks ( that I did not make ) down one side so that it's tighter around the figure.

Do not redistribute.

I'm finding a lot of names for armor parts to be hard to remember. screw it: if your work is good, the names don't matter

I desperately want a chainmail tanktop like that.

Tabon In reply to Pythosart [2012-02-21 21:15:21 +0000 UTC]

I would make you one, but, I do not think you'd have the money to commission me for it D: It would probably even be easier for you to buy a chainmail top and detach the sleeves and customise the sides xDDD

you have reminded me that I need to finish the underarms ( and make undergarments )

Pythosart In reply to Tabon [2012-02-22 09:42:31 +0000 UTC]

You are quite right. Althouuuughhhh...I did get about ā‚¬400 richer while in Italy. My relatives love to give me money XD

But you're right. I'll buy one at the next renaissance faire nearby. I would imagine that tailoring a chainmail shirt would take pliers and steel wire, am I right? I suppose I could also use leather instead. Aaand I need to find a gambeson... hm.

You are most welcome

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

Tabon In reply to Pythosart [2012-02-22 15:45:55 +0000 UTC]

xDDD ā‚¬400 would pay for a very high end commission of mine! But you'd be expecting something like ā‚¬4,000 for a chainmail shirt made by me that's customised like that one :l if purely for the hours that went into it.

You'd likely find a shirt that's got sleeves for you to detach, so you won't really need wire. But if for some reason you do need wire, go for Galvanised steel because it's waterproof xD You'll need two pairs of pliers ...leather? o: For the gambeson? ... ... derp *knows what she will be doing when she gets home* FUCKING FIRE ALARM. SHUT UP.

Eeehhhh I think I'll pass XD I need as much dough as possible in order to survive Freshman year at SCAD. Or buy lots and lots of video games. Or go to Ultra Music Festival in Miami next year. DECISIONS.

I'd need to cut open the back and tailor the shirt to fit my figure a little better. Obviously, chainmail isn't stretchy so I can't fit it too much, but the usual shirts are too loose and too long for my liking. I'd need either wire or rivets to put it back. Althoughhhh..... I suppose I could use some sort of fastener in the front or the sides. That way I wouldn't have to put it back together and I could fit it as tight as I like

I would use the leather both as padding for the shoulders and as a possible way to hold the back together after I've tailored it. I could make a crude "spine" out of leather and metal plates, both for looks and for...well, looks is about it.

Nhhh don't use leather for the gambeson. Leather chafes. Use cotton, stuffed with a small amount of down or fiberfill (fiberfill is waaaaaaaay cheaper, and you can buy it in sheets). It shouldn't be poofy, but it should be at least a half centimeter thick, and a bit squishy. Black cotton looks best.

Understandable! xD I did Scuba diving, rockclimbing, castle and cave touring and eating out in my Freshers week O: all was about Ā£5ish xD I don't drink though, so it's really a case of whether you do or not that will determine the prices really xD atleast that's what it was like here.. there were a few cool trips I wanted to go on, but they were booked up :c

You can do what I did and use fastening hooks down one side? xD works well, not too visable. But if you want to incorporate the fastenings into the design; i.e, the scales, I'm sure that would work too o: exceepptt... it might be difficult to put on. As you said, chainmail isn't strechy, so I don't know if you'd be able to spin the shirt around and put your arms in once you've done the back up. You may just need to get fitted into the armour like a true knight!

Ahhh, awesome lD I'll do that. We have a good mutual experience in this area between us xD

Sheesh. I don't think I've got the necessary cash for such adventures, even if I do save XD The problem with the U.S. is that everything is far away (gas money) and if it's a popular attraction, it's expensive. And I will be in Georgia. It's swampy and there are no mountains for hundreds of miles, much less caves. No shortage of swamps, though.

Ah, that's a good idea. I'd like something that can be closed completely and would hold should I decide to run around or climb something. I suppose I could get all outfitted like a proper knight. More like shield-maiden than knight, actually. My buddy Nick is the resident knight.

Yeahhh we're a good team. I've been researching cloth recently (I'm doing some costumery of my own). If you want a good strong cloth, canvas or Broadcloth are the way to go.

Swamps are cool. I've seen marsh.. never been in a swamp though.

and cool o: if I can get hold of some I might try that over summer

Pythosart In reply to Tabon [2012-03-05 23:25:10 +0000 UTC]

Swamps are great from a photo, but they're extremely buggy and often don't smell great. Do you have mosquitoes over there? 'Skeeters love them some swamps.

Let me know how it goes

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

Tabon In reply to Pythosart [2012-03-06 15:38:47 +0000 UTC]

yeah we have mozzis xD mostly in the summer though. They preffer my sister over me. I don't often get bitten. Don't ever go to Scotland in the Summer if you want to stay alive though. You won't be able to see through the bloodsucking clouds.

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

Pythosart In reply to Tabon [2012-03-06 15:58:56 +0000 UTC]

Mozzis, hm? Dahn hearr 'n th' South we call 'em 'skeeters. Please excuse my pathetic attempt at a Southern accent.

I must be delicious, because I get sooooo many mosquito bites in the summer. Thankfully I don't get ticks. My brother does (a lot), but I rarely find one on me. Ticks are way worse than mosquitoes. Do you have any of those little bastard over there?

I'll keep that in mind. Yorkshire was nice, though. No bugs at all.

Yet to go to Yorkshire.. one day! D:

Pythosart In reply to Tabon [2012-03-06 16:56:32 +0000 UTC]

Well that's good at least. Ticks are awful.

I've got to travel more in the UK. I love what little I've seen, and I want to go boating on the canal again.

I can't remember if you've ever been to the South of England at atall, or Wales. It's prettier down here than up North xD ..try Dartmoor, The Cotswolds, Peak District, .. most places in Wales, The New Forest ( kinda small, that )

bloody hell that is a long Summer! ._. well, mine's not too far off I suppose xD yours just sounds waaay longer because you manages to get to May xD Mine's 8th of June to 1st of October ( I think ) within that time I hope to go camping in Dartmoor and somehow get lots of commissions and a job .... actually I think mine is longer...

It's just because my high school lets out early and my college starts late. I need a job too D:

European schools seem to always have super long summers. Some of my Italian buddies have told me their schedules. They have like three whole months.

Tabon In reply to Pythosart [2012-03-08 07:02:13 +0000 UTC]

Throughout school I had pretty much just a month off for summer.. but uni holidays seem to last forever ( 4 months ) I suppose it's variable to what you're doing xD

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

Pythosart In reply to Tabon [2012-03-08 13:45:00 +0000 UTC]

Traditional schools here have 2 months of summer, my school has about 1.5. I'm pretty sure we get more breaks in between over here. Maybe not in college.

Very cool!! I'm hoping to get started on doing a chain coif for my templar costume I know it will take a while hah, but your maile vest is looking ace here! Put some padding/leather underneath that and it should be slash proof!! Not stab proof tho lol

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

Tabon In reply to SkaraManger [2011-11-05 15:51:58 +0000 UTC]

xD I want that under padding if just to make it more comfortable when I wear it. Thankyou! I have no idea how difficult it will be to make a coif.. I had no idea how to make the armpits that I'm going to put on that shirt until some Larper dude I met not so long ago told me xD

Gambeson.

Never had the patience for putting together mail, always drove me batty.

Respects to you.

Heavy though, ain't it. After 3 days fighting in mine my shoulders are crying out for a bath.

Looks good

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

Tabon In reply to ettiennenavarre [2011-10-28 20:53:59 +0000 UTC]

That's it! .. I'll forget as soon as I close this conversation box.

It doess require patience.. but so does my drawing, my bodybuilding, my sculpting.. xD kind of used to it.. as I'm also used to about 13kg of art stuff on my back every day to University/College/School. But, no, it's not terribly kind to your shoulders. I feel your pain. However, it's nice that it's more evenly distributed than a heavy rucksack that likes to try and pull your ribs apart. When I get a Gambeson, I figure I'll be able to wear my chainmail a lot more often.

Thankyou very much!

How have I missed thiiiis? You've actually finished this? Duuuude it looks so awesome! Are you wearing it around uni? And did that ring that I returned to you after you left it at Michael's ever make it on?

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

Tabon In reply to Noolin [2011-10-25 05:49:00 +0000 UTC]

xDD It's not finished.. it's just a Vest shirt at the moment. Over Christmas ( maybe ) and over next summer, I plan to make it a T-shirt. I haven't worn it around uni yet because of the amount of stuff I have to carry and the difficulty of going up that hill D: I need under armour padding to not destroy my shoulders, and then I may do that on days where I only have a book and pen to bring in. And yes! That little ring made it in! You didn't ruin it's life's goals xDD

thankyou :B
There is now a sixpack under that chainmail lD I finally have it!
I feel it's risky, but one day, if I can make chainmail more easily, then I should maybe xD and I want to learn leatherwork and other metal works too. The fun for me is in editing clothes. I tend not to like making them from patents. This chainmail I just made tailored to my body, so it was easy.

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

Kittyillustrations In reply to Tabon [2011-10-13 19:04:11 +0000 UTC]

WOOT *rubs your sixpack* how long did it take to get one and what exercises did you do.
that be good to learn im sure there tons who love to buy custom leather stuff.

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

Tabon In reply to Kittyillustrations [2011-10-14 08:52:36 +0000 UTC]

Well I started bodybuilding when I was 15 I think xD feels like longer.. maybe I started when I was 14.. so, a long time. But through that I was learning techniques rather than doing the right thing straight off. Now that I'm at uni, I'm eating less and walking more. I really needed that extra amount of aerobic exercise to add definition. The exercises I do for my abs are Bicycle crunches and V-sits. The Bicycle crunches I do 12 minutes of a day, split into 2 sets with a minute break inbetween each set ( 4 minutes, break 2 minutes ).. but you really need to do it properly to achieve anything, i.e, fully extending your legs and touching the floor and your knees with your elbows. A slight arch in the back/incline does so much more as well. The V-sits I do with 4kg held behind my head and 4kg strapped to my feet and I do 200 of those split into 2 sets with a break inbetween again ( 50, stop, 50 finish ) but you can't just do cardio like that, you need a supportive diet and you need to do aerobic exercise as well to burn off fat. I tend to do this 4 times a week if I'm at uni/work/whatever. During the holidays I would do a system of 2 days - rest day - 2 days - rest day - and sometimes do 3 days if I feel I've slacked previously or if I don't feel like I'm achieving my goal. Rest days are very important though xD don't want to damage yourself and the rest days give your muscle time to mend - which is when it gets bigger. ... ESSAY. Well now you know how to get a six pack :I ( Age is also an important factor, but I know you're older than me, so you'll be fine xD )

Kittyillustrations In reply to Tabon [2011-10-15 14:38:20 +0000 UTC]

You could do you own exercise and healthy eating/living tips videos and put them on youtube X3
i wish i had more space in my room to do them and if i did it in the living room im sure my dad will say something random that put me off lol.
For couple weeks ive been doing i think 3 mile job maybe abit more i do that twice a week and i pretty much go out everyday for long walks. i think my diet not the best but im not eating any hardly any junk food. i just have the 2 bowls of bran flakes morning and evening and middle of the day i have nooodles or something small. Some days i do treat myself to some junk food. but always making sure i have the right portions

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

Tabon In reply to Kittyillustrations [2011-10-15 16:27:50 +0000 UTC]

xD I don't like exercising infront of people either.

Uh xD 2 bowls of branflakes in the morning AND the evening is very bad for you. You need variation in your diet. And then that in combination with noodles - all you're having is carbohydrates. Scratch that and get some meats and vegetables in your diet xD

Kittyillustrations In reply to Tabon [2011-10-16 16:25:29 +0000 UTC]

i have to tons of fibre cause my ibs, hate having it.
but yea i do need to snack on more veg only time i have veg is either when i go to the cafe at the seafront and have a a spud with the rabbit food on the side and on sundays xDD. dont worry i dont just eat noodles sometimes it be a chicken burger butty or something but i know i need to eat more fruit.
