The M8 Special Purpose Automatic Rifle is a partcile burst light machine gun based on the M7 Service rifle and a variant of the M8 Squad Automatic Rifle. It is chambered in 7x44mm PBCL and was adopted by various Union Navy special forces as a light machine gun/ assault rifle hybrid weapon system.

The M8 SPAR is a lightened and slightly shortened variant of the M8 SAR with a reduced rate of fire and incorporates various features of the M7 Service Mk.2 assault rifle.

The 110 round helical magazines are much more maintenance intensive and expensive than box magazines or ammunition belts with boxes and where chosen primarily because it allows for the vast majority of parts being interchangeable between the M7 Service rifle and the first generation M8 SAR, a rifle style manual of arms and fast and uncomplicated reloads. The magazine well is compatible with standard SMI produced 30 round magazines and their integrated batteries. Interestingly the magazines sit slightly higher in M8 than in the M7, improving the feeding angle.

The M8 SPAR has an acceptable effective range for an energy machine gun that is however significantly lower than that of a standard issue 6.5mm CT infantry rifle or SAR. It does suffer practically no "projectile drop", but is of course heaviliy impacted by a loss of cehesion of the particle burst itself over long distances or in particulary dense atmospheres. Most units who adopted the weapon are specialized in urban combat or boarding actions where the significantly lower effective range isn't much of an issue.

The weapon's firing mechanism is based on superconductor cartridges that are filled with a special kind of solid fuel. The cartridges are chambered like normal rounds in an automatic rifle . When the trigger is pulled, the cartridge is vaporized, injected into the barrel and accelerated.

The bolt is operated by gas pressure and works the same way as on a regular firearm, the ejection port can be easily swapped from one side to the other and serves as a main heat sink and a way to eject a faulty cartridge or to safely unload the weapon.

If the weapon is fired weak sided for extended periods of time, the heat exhaust from the ejection port might significantly impact the shooters accuracy and comfort, the rifle would however shut down from overheating long before the exhaust could seriously burn the shooter's face.
