Description My most recent piece of work...

Started out as a colab with =qaz2008 , but we decided to scrap it and start over. I kept the parts I had made and developed it into this.

If you want other resolutions than 16:10, give me a shout

Sorry for the recent spree of monotone colored pieces, I'll try to spice things up for my next upload

Comments more than welcome.

Update: Wallpaper pack with resolutions 16:10 and 16:9 added. And some minor flaws with the atmosphere on the planet added.

Update 2: This deviation was first submitted to the Eternal Reminiscemce contest. Than shortly thereafter removed it since I though I could do better with the theme. I now realise I won't be able to due to exams, and moving this back as my final entry for the contest.

I love it! It takes me on a trip...
May I use it for skinning my laptop?

Wow, the light in this scene is very effect, and it is great composition to the images, as it effectively drags the eyes across the image!!!!! Wow, keep up this fabulous work!!!

ipadwallpaper.eu is editing using this art without crediting you. I found some of my own on there and sent them a Cease and Desist email but have received no response so I'm spreading it around. [link]
The only credit I can see is the tag in the picture, but it cuts off right before it. This is purely accident as they make everything that size regardless of whats on the image. No links back here or consent.

Hello mate, my band 'Event Horizon' are looking for a spaced theme logo. Love your work and was wondering if you would be interested in designing one for us?
Cheers, Adam Stammers

It's really good but the lighting on all the planets are wrong. They're all different directions and that's not really right. The big ones facing bottom left and the smaller ones are facing top left and the really small one is facing top right. Good work though!

man the planet texture of that giant is STUNNING. The depth is amazing, how did you do that? I appreciate any tips.

tadp0l3 In reply to ErikShoemaker [2010-12-19 20:15:44 +0000 UTC]

It's nothing special really, the spherize filter is all that's been used. The trick is finding and planning your texture stitching properly. This planet consists of somewhere along the lines of 50 textures stitched together (A bit unnecessary since it's less than a quarter showing though). Some from NASA, some from google earth and some from other places. The resolution on the planet was 8000^2 or 12000^2 (which is a bitch on my 3 year old laptop - but worth it in the end). The problem is that the spherize filter is distorting the pixels at the edges of the sphere, to a real ugly effect - really pixelated. Only the "corners" of the sphere remains unaffected (0, 90, 180, 270 degrees). So I choose a "corner" and picked textures that already seemed to have some perspective (like mountain ridges becoming smaller, rivers also becoming smaller etc) - that added a lot extra to the depth once I spherized it. That's basically it, nothing special from what others do, just careful planing in placing the texture - and to do it as high res as you can

wow haha, I didn't really expect an answer to that question. Awesome man, I guess I just have to work more thoughtfully with my textures because actually I create them the same way. My problem is that after a couple of hours I become lazy and start to rush things.

Hehe, I live to serve

Ever figured out a way to avoid the distorting of pixels around the edges when working high res btw?

ErikShoemaker In reply to tadp0l3 [2010-12-20 19:09:30 +0000 UTC]

no never :/ I always have to work in mega high res and hope that the distortion won't be visible after resizing.
A good alternative is 3D without any distortion.

Hey man, i absolutely love this image! Can i ask you for a 16:9 version of it?
It would fit in perfectly with my ubuntutheme for my laptop, i only need a 1366x768 render of it, would be greatly appreciated.

I'm gonna f*ck around in gimp and see if i can make something similar, you inspired me.

And if you do a new render of it, please send me a note and i'll be super happy!

Quality of the stocks is good. However, it's missing some depth, and there's a graphical glitch at the bottom right planet's corner

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

tadp0l3 In reply to Uribaani [2010-11-10 16:30:13 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, recently noticed the glitch - I used a different technique for the atmosphere than I usually do - and it involves a s*itload of layers, guess I nudged a couple accidentally - easily fixed though

Glad you find the stocks to be good too - I guess you mean the planet texture, as the space scape is painted. The planet has a 10000x10000 res and consists of over 50 high-res (average 2000x2000 res) textures compressed and downsized for increased quality. The planet as a whole is downsized too (obviously) - gives nice results, but is relatively time-consuming.

Lack of depth is a reoccurring phenomena in the space art genre - sadly for me as well
