Description So this is what ate up a good chunk of my Spring Break - getting this mask done for my Casting and Molding class. This is one of our "big" assignments (think of it as a mid-term) and boy, I put a huge amount of time (and money -___-; ) into making this the very best I could, simply because I was inspired!

Literally, right before designs were due for this (I'll try to keep looking for the original sketch, too, and post it if I find it), I saw 's latest contest posted - one on mythology and mythological creatures, and figured, why the heck not!

So, this is now my entry for the contest. Read more about it here -> [link]

For information on how the mask was made, including materials and whatnot, please check out the WIP guide thingie .

The mask is meant to be worn as a mask, even though it sits more on the top of your head than on your face. There are no straps to hold it in place, but I do need to add a comb to make it stick on better, especially if wearing it with a wig.

All in all, it's really light - I have to say around 2-3 lbs or so, so not that much, considering how many layers there are on it. I was quite amazed, to be honest - I was expecting it to need a chin strap to hold it on and everything. The feathers (real one's) do add a huge amount of drag to it, though. And doorways become a bit of a hassle, because you're paranoid of bonking the beak on something

It is roughly 2 feet long, and a little over a foot wide at the widest. The beak sticks out almost a full foot from your face, which is what makes it disconcerting to walk around in, but otherwise, it is comfortable and easy to wear.

... and before anyone asks, I am planning on making a full costume to go with it, but I haven't decided on style or anything like that - I'm waiting for another bit of inspiration.

Thank you so very much! This was such a pain to make, and a huge learning experience, but I'm still happy with it (it's hanging on my wall, now )

I looked at the step by step how you made it and it sure seems like a learning experience. Good thing you still like it with how much work it must have been. I wanted to make a phoenix mask last halloween but this just blows me away.

A lovely mask, but at first glance it looks a bit like a giant red echidna....

Well, if it helps, there is no way this one could take that much use - it's a little too delicate for mascot use, although that would be darned cool

That is true - although, this mask even tried my patience, and I wouldn't have done as much with it, if it had not been a complete distraction from other homework that I hated doing

taeliac In reply to FutureCarrotLab [2008-03-30 19:56:31 +0000 UTC]

Yah, I know that I wish I had a spray booth and whatnot to do more stuffs like this - that's the only reason I'm going to be sad when I graduate!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FutureCarrotLab In reply to taeliac [2008-03-30 20:35:49 +0000 UTC]

I know what you mean! I might actually end up investing in a spray booth and such after I move to Green Bay. My roommate wants to start a custom computer company, and I told him I could paint the cases and such.

But, depending on the income of that, I might end up getting an airbrushing set or something.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

taeliac In reply to FutureCarrotLab [2008-03-30 22:38:22 +0000 UTC]

Oh, that would be so awesome! I've always wanted to try that, but I dunno - too much other stuffs!

I don't know that you'd need a booth if you did airbrushing, although I don't know if you can airbrush enamel... I'd check into that. Otherwise, "simple" spray booths are apparently easy to build with a really good Shop Vac and some duct work... the bigger one's are almost like hood vents for stoves, but on the side, so it pulls the paint back... for now, the garage will have to suffice

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FutureCarrotLab In reply to taeliac [2008-03-30 23:37:15 +0000 UTC]

yeah, there was a larger one at my highschool, and I was one of the only people who got to use it.

I don't know that I'll get the entire station, but I'll probably get an airbrushing kit or something like that, and the enamel shouldn't bug us, we can always strip that off and get down to the metal, or I can find different paints or something of the sort that will work.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

taeliac In reply to FutureCarrotLab [2008-03-31 00:41:31 +0000 UTC]

Hrm... I think enamel might be about it, but I'm sure you can water it down, or maybe, if you're using nicer paints, clear coat it... now you've got me thinking!

I was hoping to get to buy an airbrush/compressor this weekend, but alas, didn't happen *whines*

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FutureCarrotLab In reply to taeliac [2008-03-31 01:18:02 +0000 UTC]

I think we'll end up using the nicest paints we can afford at whatever point in time, but once we get the business up and running, we'll settle on a nicer kind.

Oh, and are we still going out to eat for lunch the Thursday before NBC? I think I'm riding up to EC with a couple of friends, so they might come along, but only if it's okay with you, as well.

taeliac In reply to FutureCarrotLab [2008-03-31 01:23:51 +0000 UTC]

Excellent! Well, just invest in good primers, and a decent sealer, and you should all be good!

I'm hoping we will, but I won't know for sure until we get closer to the con, I'm so paranoid - I might be scrambling to finish Tailoring work - our jacket is due pretty much the week after the convention *cries* And, the more the merrier!

Well, if you're staying at the Ramada or something, we can always go out and get something at a restaurant in the area, and bring it to you guys, tell you what's on the menu when we're there (can just call you or something) and then you can pay us back when we bring it to you. Then you don't have to take an extended break from getting things done, and no one's starving. ^^
