Description Disney Princesses of my childhood do the rococo. Inspired by late 1700s French fashion illustrations but not aimed to be a direct reproduction... I just had to keep the brighter "Disney" colours.

Fine marker, watercolours.

If Rapunzel was in this group too her hair would need it's own separate paper, based on the rate of hair-bigness lol. Good thing SHE wasn't one of the princesses of your childhood then!

This picture is so beautiful.

Have you ever seen this gallery by shoomlah, ( shoomlah.deviantart.com/galler… )? I thought you might like her version of Belle ( shoomlah.deviantart.com/art/An… ).

Who hasn't seen that one, it's been in my own favourites since she posted it.Β  Β  It's kind of impossible to not put Belle in the 1700s since that's the most prevalent period in the film's design.Β  I started my princesses inspired by a series of postcards my sister brought from Versailles.

Have you ever thought about doing a Historical Princess series yourself?

P.S. -- Any chance of seeing the Versailles postcards?

I don't have the cards scanned in (just rebuilding my PC after it went gloriously kaputtt last week >_< ) but this is one of them found via a quick google: www.flickr.com/photos/houseofs… and this is a compilation someone else did of the dresses in the cards: farm4.static.flickr.com/3022/2…

And nah, I doubt I'll ever do a historically "accurate" princess series as such, so many have been done already that I don't think I could add anything new to it.Β  I will however continue to occasionally put the princesses in historical settings when I feel like it.

Oh my gosh she's adorable, I love the hands and overall pose!!

Only tip I'd give you though is if you use dip pens get denser paper. Smooth bristol board or pressed watercolour paper (not the soft and fluffy paper that rips almost like tissue when you tug it with your fingers) works out best in my experience. Even better grade sketch pads like Daler&Rowney's Ebony/Artist ranges work well and if you don't use watercolours then normal printer paper is good but it can't deal with water without becoming a crumply mess. Porous cartridge or sketching paper and some types of watercolour paper suck ink like a sponge and give you that frayed and fuzzy linework. Which can in itself be a cool effect too but if you want clean lines get more solid paper.
