Description Goddess of Time - Verthandi

Verthandi is the oldest of all the gods of Hyrule and Termina. Her exact age is unknown, even to her, as she is known to create a small realm for herself outside the reach of time and meditate for extended periods while time literally stands still. In spite of her age, Verthandi appears as a beautiful young woman, frail and fair in appearance. However, one of her more daunting features would be her eyes, which are a pure, milky white with no discernable iris or pupil. Because of this, the Goddess is blind to the world around her, but is able to see events of the past, present and future with what is often referred to as the 'Inner Eye'.

Because of Verthandi's powers of pre- and post-cognition, she has accurately predicted many catastrophic events within the realm of the gods, namely those surrounding her sister Mati, and Verthandi's future husband, Raenke. Verthandi's most notable prophecies include the sudden grip of insanity on the gods Asden and Majora, Raenke's siblings and the Gods of Death and Darkness respectively, leading to the eventual deaths of Mati and Raenke. However, in spite of knowing their predestined deaths, both Mati and Raenke went willingly into death's arms, knowing that the results would lead to better futures for their respective worlds.

After Mati died in the process of giving birth to her youngest son, Verthandi took charge of looking over her sister's orphaned children alongside her own offspring. When the time came that Mati's children chose to create the world of Hyrule, Verthandi's own children chose to create Termina. Because of the closeness between them, the worlds created by the children of Mati and the children of Verthandi looked quite similar, to the point of having many of their creations come out exactly the same. This is how many people of Hyrule and Termina have experienced the phenomena of meeting a sort of 'doppleganger' from the other world. Being a mother figure for both families, Verthandi was granted some degree of control over both worlds, though such control is most notably recognized during the lifetime of the fabled Hero of Time. She has never interfered before that point or since... or, at the very least, she has never interfered as noticeably.

In the midst of Termina's creation, the second prophecy went into motion. Majora was gripped by a sudden, intense fit of madness, and went on a rampage, destroying much of what Verthandi's children had worked so hard to create. At first, it seemed to be nothing more than a nuisance, as Majora focused only on ravaging the world that Verthandi's children had created. However, it wasn't long before what had started as a nuisance became an immediate threat on the lives of her children. When Majora's wrath was directed towards Verthandi's children, Raenke intervened, and the two gods clashed in what was recounted in many sagas as a rather violent, destructive fight. Termina was nearly destroyed in the process.

As the battle dragged on, Raenke made a large gamble, attempting to seal Majora away in a mask to contain the destructive, consuming nature of Majora's power rather than risk a final outburst in Majora's final moments. By some massive stroke of luck, the gambit worked. However, as Majora was about to be sealed, he countered Raenke's spell, sealing him within a mask of his own, and using his powers of darkness, both masks were scattered, vanishing into the mortal realm, beyond the reach of Verthandi or her children. Because of Majora's mindless insanity, the spell sealing Raenke in the mask was too unstable to fully contain him, effectively killing Raenke's soul, leaving only his powers sealed within the mask.

With no means at the time to find the masks, Verthandi and her children rebuilt Termina. As Mati's children dwelled amongst their creations, so too did Verthandi's. Verthandi, however, remained within the divine realm, watching over both worlds with a motherly eye, offering wisdom and insight to the gods of Hyrule and Termina whenever they sought it.

Verthandi is depicted as a young, beautiful woman wearing flowing garments, with long white hair and a golden halo reminiscent in shape to the sun or the markings of a clock. She is always depicted wielding what is known as the Staff of Time, which bears a sun and moon on either end of the shaft, which is made of gold and silver with an obsidian ring in the center, and a crystalline hourglass bearing golden sand. It is believed that the staff itself is what controls time, constantly rotating on its own, matching the movements of the sun and moon, and speeding up or slowing the rotation can thusly speed up or slow down time respectively. This further enforces the belief that the time of twilight is a time of great significance, as at that point the staff would be level with the earth, capable of postponing time infinitely if its rotation is suspended, as the sands of time cannot shift at such a position.

That's actually who Raenke is.    He is the entity within the Fierce Deity Mask.

Woah, so... godly! Loved the description. So, Raenke became the Oni mask? Wait, who is Mati's son? Isn't she the mother of Din, Nayru and Farore?

Anywho, I love the design.
Well done!

Yup, Raenke is the Fierce Deity.

Mati is the mother of Din, Farore, Naryu, Koboku (Great Deku Tree), Sunare (Goddess of the Sand/Desert Colossus), Jabun (Jabu-Jabu) Volvagia, and Seiryu... Seiryu was the youngest, and the one Mati died giving birth to.

I've had nearly eight years to think this up... I have no life~

Thank you very much! ^^ I worked hard on all of the deity designs... they've taken me 6-7 years to develop. It's nice to know that my hard work is paying off. Thank you so much!

...sounds like my developing. Only it's more like it evolves - start with a basic design, and over the years shift to something a bit more grander. x3

*drops upside-down on a webline* Verthandi...Why does that sound oddly familiar...?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TaiOshiro In reply to AJ-Prime [2009-11-14 03:59:46 +0000 UTC]

It's the name of one of the Norns of Norse mythology, along with Skuld and Urd, though it's normally spelled as 'Verdandi'. However, the name is used in "Ah My Goddess", but is translated as "Belldandy" because in Japanese, it would be pronounced 'Berudandi'.

Any of that strike a mental chord? o.o

Well, if she's the Goddess of Time, then she IS history. Lame pun, but those are the funny ones.
Of course... I also added "description and appearance", hmm... >.> Bah. The main point was the whole "Verthandi is an interesting history" thing. Tehehe...

Does this mean that you might read my Zelda manga thingy whenever I get around to drawing it? Maybe?
