That's a really hard question to answer. (And you know what that means. This is probably going to be a LONG post. )
I honestly don't know how I started drawing the way I do. And you have to remember that EVERYONE learns differently. There's right or wrong way. (unless someone just sits down, traces a picture and then calls it their own. Now that's wrong. And that's cheating.)
Some people still look at other people's poses, but they don't copy it, they just use it as a reference, which pretty much means they just use it to figure out what goes where and how (how someone's arm looks when held at a particular angle, how their clothes wrinkle when they stand a certain way.. stuff like that), but it's probably not good to just copy it line for line, especially if it's someone else's art..that is, unless you have the artist's permission and you give them credit for it.
It just takes practice, I guess. You have to find your own style. Personally, the inspiration for my style originally came YEARS ago from what used to be my FAVORITE movie, Balto. I would pause my VCR and sit down and draw him. I'd draw him over and over in different poses, with different expressions, etc.. then eventually, I could sit down and draw him without even looking at a picture.
Then I started drawing all my other wolves to kindof look like him, but slightly different. Through experimentation, it eventually turned out to be like what I do today.
PEOPLE, though, were a different story. I REALLY don't remember. I think I used to try and draw them like my favorite cartoon characters on TV.
Really, what it comes down to is practice. I promise you, over the years, you'll sit down and draw MILLIONS of pictures that you really don't like, and only a few that you do. But those millions of mess-ups will be the steps to help you to find your own style.. your own personal way of drawing stuff.
My suggestion? Try different things. Look at people's art. Find characteristics there that you like, and try it out on your own drawings. Don't copy, but rather, make it your OWN. Make it slightly different.
I know you really like the anime-ish type stuff. But even that can be tricky without some practice at real human anatomy.
Have you ever tried sitting down and drawing a realistic picture of someone? If you look at photos of real people, and try to draw it exactly how you see it, it's really good practice at learning how to draw people more easily, even if it's in a cartoon version later on.
Are you still home schooling? If so, do you ever go to any sort of art/craft classes at all? Because all the art classes at my school really helped me a lot.
If I were closer, I'd help, but being two hours away and knowing how busy you guys always are, that's pretty impossible at this point, eh?
Did any of this make sense?
(Did you even read it all, little miss I-cant-sit-still-more-than-five-seconds?)

After October's over, we're really not going to be all that busy.
You guys are welcome up here any time you like. We have a guest bedroom and a couch that pulls out into a bed, so there'd be plenty of space if you guys wanted/needed to stay the night some time.
If we have at least two weeks notice, Ben and I could probably get a specific day or two off work, if not, we might be gone part of the day, but you guys would still be welcome to hang out till we get home or whatever.
And we're almost always off Sunday afternoons and Mondays, if that helps.. ; )
Anyway.. yeah. Stuff. N'stuff.
