I ask everyone who ever does these kind of drawings, but I do it out of curiousity. How were you able to keep the shades and the blacks so solid? Do you use pen?

I use multiple graphite pencils with varying shades(H,F and B to name a few). I constantly blend and fill in the dark areas just to make sure I have it as dark as I can possibly make it. I do the same thing while shading. I use multiple pencils to find the right shade and am constantly shading and erasing till I feel the tone is just right. I also experiment with how much force I exert while shading with my pencils to also get the tone I want.
I'm still very much the amateur and I'm still developing my technique. This is just the way I do things and I hope this helps you somewhat.
