Description
Welcome to the fifth addition to my 2018 Halloween poster selection. And for this post, I've decided to showcase a recent addition to the big screen, to be specific it's another film based on a certain character from Marvel comics. Specifically, you've always seen this character as an antagonist/rival to the infamous Spiderman (which has had several movies, been rebooted three times and even had that famous sad moment in infinity war. p.s- I think the Brachiosaurus had the sadder death but that's beside the point) this character is known for having a very snarky sense of humor, and in some cases, can be downright dangerous, whether it be mimicking the abilities of Spiderman, or he very ability to "merge" with anybody he sees fit...
that's right, for this post, we'll be talking about the awesome villain/anti-hero simply known as....
VENOM!
If I was to describe this character, using official sources I think this is the best way to explain him:
SHORT HISTORY:
Venom is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics, commonly in association with the superhero Spider-Man. The character is a sentient alien Symbiotic organism with an amorphous, liquid-like form, who usually requires a host, often times a human (though he has been known to "infect" other animals such as dogs, cats, tigers, and even dinosaurs!), to bond with for its survival. After bonding with a host, the Symbiote bestows its enhanced powers upon them, these include enhanced strength, durability, speed, tentacles, and of course, the iconic milky-white eyes and the sharp dagger-like teeth. When the Venom Symbiote bonds with a human, that new dual-life form usually refers to itself as "Venom".
The original idea of venom started out as a new costume for Spider-Man was conceived by a Marvel Comics reader from Norridge, Illinois named Randy Schueller. In 1982, Jim Shooter, Marvel's editor-in-chief at the time, sent Schueller a letter acknowledging Marvel's interest in the idea, which they ended up purchasing from him for $220. Shooter came up with the idea of switching Spider-Man to a black-and-white costume, possibly influenced by the intended costume design for the idea of Spider-Woman, with artist Mike Zeck designing the black-and-white costume. Writer/artist John Byrne states on his website that the idea for a costume made of self-healing biological material was one he originated when he was the artist on Iron Fist to explain how that character's costume was constantly being torn and then apparently repaired by the next issue, explaining that he ended up not using the idea on that title, but that Roger Stern later asked him if he could use the idea for Spider-Man's alien costume. Stern in turn plotted the issue in which the costume first appeared but then left the title.
It was, in fact, writer Tom DeFalco and artist Ron Frenz who established the idea of the costume being a sentient alien being that was vulnerable to high sonic energy during their run on The Amazing Spider-Man that preceded Michelinie's. The full first appearance of Venom is in The Amazing Spider-Man #300 (May 1988), after the Symbiote bonds with peter parker's rival, Eddie Brock.
POWERS AND ABILITIES:
When bonded to a host these often include the following...
-Superhuman Strength
-Superhuman Durability
-Superhuman Stamina/speed
-Regenerative Healing Factor
-Genetic Memory
-Wall-Crawling
-"Webbing" Generation
-Telepathy
-Immunity to Spider-Man's Spider Sense
-Stretching and deforming/Shapeshifting
WEAKNESSES:
-HIGH-FREQUENCY SOUND WAVES
-EXTREME HEAT/FIRE!
-Knull: An ancient deity who according to some comics, actually created the symbiotes.
There are SO many stories involving this character that it'd be IMPOSSIBLE to go through ALL of them in a post such as this, so for the final part, I'll be addressing his film/movie appearances...
TV APPEARANCES:
-Spiderman: the animated series (1994)
-Spiderman unlimited (1999)
-the spectacular spiderman (2008)
-Ultimate Spiderman (2012)
-Avengers Assemble (2012)
-HULK and the agents of S.M.A.S.H. (2013)
-Phineas and Ferb: Mission Marvel (2013)
-Lego Marvel Super Heroes: Maximum Overload (2013)
-Guardians of the Galaxy (2015)
-Spider-Man (2017)
MOVIE APPEARANCES:
Now here's the strange thing, for such a popular character (probably one of marvels MOST popular villains/anti-heroes) that has been in SO many comics, SO many tv shows, SO many video games, and SO many action figures, the strangest thing is that when it comes to the world of the cinema, he hadn't made many appearances at all...and even then, for a long time he wasn't a very prominent character.
in fact, pior to this year, Venom has only appeared in one theatrically released movie, and that was Sam Raimi's final Spider-Man installment, called "Spider-Man 3" (2007) But the big problem many people had with that rendition was that It was a big departure from the source material (as my sister puts it: he was too small, had the wrong voice and showed his "normal" face WAY too much), that and the character himself was completely overshadowed by the two other villains in the movie such as sand-man and the green goblin.
in fact, if you look at almost ALL of the media in which Venom has made a film appearance, he has made some prominent appearance yes, but nearly ALL of them were in some way in the shadow of spiderman or some other superhero character.
that is until this year, when VENOM FINALLY got his own solo movie, with no spiderman or peter parker in sight, and when it was first announced, obviously there was some skepticism, so it was definitely taking a BIG risk with having "venom" be the protagonist.
But just two weeks ago, me and my family went to see this film at a cinema in Oban, and both me and my sister agree that even without Spiderman, this venom movie was surprisingly solid for what it was trying to do and "weirdly works".
and Now, just to share my opinon on the subject here is...
MY mini-REVIEW ON THE VENOM MOVIE (2018)
(warning: SPOILERS)
to be straightforward, my initial thought when seeing this movie were something along the lines of:
"HOLY MOLY!!! THAT WAS SO COOL!"
I'm not joking, when I was going into this film I had admittedly low expectations and while this film does have nitpick flaws (like some slight pacing issues at the very beginning) I can honestly say it's a really solid way to introduce venom in such a way that is EXTREMELY close to the source material, but before I get ahead of myself, here are some reasons why I really like this movie...
basically, If anybody was worried that it was gonna be angsty and extremely dark (as akin to that terrible batman vs superman film-my opinion), well fear not my good friends, because from I saw and from what people have pointed out, it was clearly made by people who RESPECT the character for the awesome and dangerous and sometimes kinda goofy being that he is.
Venom (the character): Was really beautifully designed, very well animated, and a very enjoyable interpretation of the character, certainly FAR better than the Sam version. I especially liked how as well as his fearsome demeanor (and trust me, he was DEFINITELY intimidating in some scenes, going so far as actually EATING PEOPLE and bitting their heads off), he also came off as hilariously goofy, the way that a towering predatory can be...often having awkward one-liners (in a good way) and actually having a funny, sorta"protective" character type when it came to his host, like it seemed like he had gotten very attached to his host, Eddie Brock, often helping him overcome emotional turmoil and stop the evil going on at the "life' foundation.
Speaking of Eddie Brock, the other side of the Venom character, he was played very well by Tom Hardy (who some of you may know from Inception and Mad max: fury road) I liked the character he of a reporter who was actually very good at his job, most reporters in films are usually depicted as overly selfish or money hungry but he actually searches for the truth and brings up important details as a reporter should, but after a bad incident where he interviews Calton Drake he ends up getting fired, and breaking his relationship with his former girlfriend and several months later, we find him having deal with the consequences and trying his best to go back up, but having a lot difficulty doing so, dealing with likely depression or anxiety, living alone on a moderately sized, but very "average" apartment in San Francisco, struggling to find a job and to top it off, he is way behind on his rent. Basically, he's hit rock bottom and really down on his luck. But despite all those unfortunate circumstances, we see time and time again in the story that he's actually a really decent guy who shows genuine kindness to most people he comes across, such as giving 20 dollars to a homeless woman in exchange for a 5 dollar newspaper.
he wasnt perfect 9like you often see with stereotypical "heroes" but he felt like a proper decent person.
Heck, one of the best elements of the film is that although his ex-girlfriend has a new boyfriend (named Dan), they don't fall into the cliche of having him be jealous of Dan. In fact Dan actually respects Eddie and when Eddie is infected by venom, Dan (being a doctor) actively tries to HELP him!
I LOVE this sort of behavior, it's them being mature realistic adults in an unusual circumstance. Eddie and dan are actually very decent towards each other
speaking of unusual circumstances, I liked how When venom infected Eddie that eddies' body actually reacted negatively at first, like how in real life the body's immune system would try to fight off an invasive entity, we seem him sweating a LOT, his face going red, having nervous twitches, a RAVENOUS appetite for flesh (even eating a live lobster at one point) and basically having the symptom of a nervous breakdown. Eventually, he and venom are able to co-operate and work together but its cool how Venom effects Eddie in a realistic way for a parasite, (though I found it VERY funny how Venom took offense to being called a "parasite")
aside from all that, the other things i liked include:
-the addition of RIOT (he's pretty creepy)
-She-venom (she's AWESOME! for multiple reasons )
-the fight scenes and chase scenes
-the dynamic between Eddie and venom.
-the creepiness of the symbiotes in general.
-the ruthless villian.
overall I can definitely say that venom is WELL worth the watch as it actually feels like the Venom we've all come to love.
it has some good horror elements, mixed in with good humor and strong, mature realistic characters (though a slight strecth on the villain, but only a little bit)
8.4 out of 10!!!
(only reason why it isn't nine is because of slight pacing issues it had at the very beginning)
