Description I've decided that to relieve some stress and give me something to do while I take a break from JP stuff.
I would do another paleoart piece.

This will mainly be showcasing random different dinosaurs from random places and random time periods...
and taking inspiration from "All Yesterdays" each picture will be depicting the dinosaurs, whilst factoring in some intriguing speculation.
it may vary from mild speculation to completely OUTLANDISH speculation, but all of which within the realms of possibility.

last time, I did a fairly accurate portait of the king of dinosaurs himself...
this time, however, I've decided to head back 80 million years before t.rex first evolved...

for this paleoart showcase I've decided to share my take on the famous herbivore...with huge spinal plates and four distinctive thagomizers at the tip of it's tail... hope you lot enjoy...

In the deep, dark forest, a huge herbivore lumbers along, his kind usually travel in small groups, as a means of protecting each other, but, much like the mega pachyderms (elephants) of the distant future, he is a solitary bull that prefers to live on his own, more specifically, he's a bull that has just recently gone into season, his colours changing from the dull brown of youth to a vibrant pattern of orange, black and white, as a main indicator that he is ready to mate. However, just like the elephants of the future, a male in season can be particularly dangerous for most animals around his size, as a special male hormone called "testosterone" kicks in, his normally docile behavior changes to a particularly violent and hyperactive state of aggression...as such, this can lead to them attacking anything in sight, living or not, looking for an outlet to all his sexual frustration, sometimes these hyper-aggressive males will even attempt to force themselves violently onto any nerby creature, whether it be their own kind, or more often some unfortunate long-neck, iguanodonts, or even some theropod. sometimes these terrifying encounters leads to the rape-victim being killed, either through empalyment, slashing, or simply being crushed.

This aggressive must-driven behaviour comes in especially handy when encountering a rival male also looking for a willing (or sometimes UNWILLING) female, their confrontations start out as a bellowing and a flashing display, showing off their colourful plates. This, combined with the excessive bellowing, usually means: "BACK OFF, this is MY turf." or "I'm the strongest male around here, leave now or meet your doom". If after a short while, the rival doesn't back off, the male would then show off a display of raw power, striking the ground (or a nearby tree) with his razor sharp tail, whilst intercutting with a vigorous shaking of his back, rattling the brightly blushed plates from side to side...

If this still does,'t work, then the final resort comes down to the males engaging in a deadly, and often qutie GRUESOME fight, inflicting painful blows with their tails, usually aims for the flanks, legs or the head. This ruthlessness lasts a short while until either the losing male surrenders, flees or in more extreme cases, is either fatality wounded or downright KILLED!

However, despite this FEARSOME reputation, this doesn't mean that these bulls always have a harsh life of ruthless frustration, sometimes when they are in a much calmer state, they will join with ther herds of females and infants (and camptosaurs that play the role of "lookout"), acting as herd-guards, browsing, drinking, sleeping and even migrating in times of hardship. And even though animals that are roughly it's size tend to be at serious risk when standing too close, smaller herbivores, small flying "proto-birds", tiny fur-balls and even miniture pterosaurs find safety in the company of this plated beast, sometimes they will graze right beside him, sometimes they will climb on his back and hitch a ride and sometimes, they will offer their sevies in a symbiotic partnership, cleansing him of parasites (including ticks and fleas) in exchange for a share of food and protection.

So even the most ruthless male can sometimes have a soft-spot.
here we see such a case of a prime bull feeding alongside a small group of young dryosaurus.
this mighty bull would eventually come to be known as....stegosaurus!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
INFO

Name: Stegosaurus ungulatus
family: heavly armoured member of Ornithischia (specially Thyreophora, and particularly stegosauridae)
Era: middle to late Jurassic period (specially the Tithonian)
Discovered by: Othniel Charles Marsh in "the bone wars" (1877 to 1892)
Size: 10- 16 feet tall and 6-7 metres long.
Wieght: likely somewhere between 5 to 11 tons
Diet: Browsing Herbivore
Location: morrison, colorado.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
so when I was making this... I was using NINE main references of speculation.
1- the testostrome-fueled argession (based on what is seen with modern elephants)
2- the vibrant pattern/sexual dimorphism (based on how dinosaurs can see vidid colours like birds)
3- thick, musclar neck (heavily inspired by all yesterdays)
4- forcing themselves onto other creatures nearby (again, inspired by all yesterdays)
5- threat displays (one of my own ideas)
6- striped pattern (partially for the display, and partially as camoflage)
7- symbiotic behaviours with dryosaurs, camptosaurus, pterosaurs, birds etc (based on such instances in the modern world and partially inspired by planet dinosaur)
8- small bristle-like protofeathers, not unlike the hairs of an elephant.

i can see that happening, it happens in many animals today so it most likely happened back then too

so you'd want to keep clear of a male stego then.

hell yeah, i'd keep clear of male iguanas for the same reason, i imagine it is the exact same but weighing the same as an elephant

This is a very well done piece of artwork. I love the beautiful colouration and the body is well proportioned. The speculation of the animal’s behaviour being similar to that of modern elephants and how it interacts with the environment of it’s time is also a nice touch. This reminds me of my own depiction of the stegosaurus I did a while back. This is very well done. I look forward to seeing more artwork in the future.

If you wouldn’t mind, could I get some feedback of my own artwork/speculations?:

1-Damn man, I love the coloring You gave the creature.

2-I also like the intense detail Youi put into when describing the animal`s behavior and lifestyle.

3-Honestly the only problem I have is when You mentioned Hadrosaurs, Hadrosaurs didn`t live in the Jurassic period

3. It was an Iguandont at best an an ancestor at worst, Camptosaurus was not a hadrosaur at all.

I never really saw it, just this comment, on the other hand didn't Kingrexy already tell you about the something covering the plates and that not allowing that based on remains from Hesperosaurus.  scienceblogs.com/tetrapodzoolo…

Taliesaurus In reply to theferretman21 [2018-11-16 12:55:44 +0000 UTC]

yeah but this is speculation and frankly I can't really bring myself to rule it out completely.

remember in dinosaur revolution the cryolphosaurus used color flushing on their faces and crests in their fight, despite there being no direct evidence for it.

theferretman21 In reply to Taliesaurus [2018-11-16 18:05:01 +0000 UTC]

There is a difference between speculation and going against what we know of an animal.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Taliesaurus In reply to theferretman21 [2018-11-16 19:02:36 +0000 UTC]

and we don't know the full extent of the animal.

look, I'm pretty sure it's somewhat possible.
