A friend of mine works for a history museum and he said that the "wheellock" pistols and rifles were originally called "Clockworks" because of the springs and cogs. The steampunk version is more myth the practical, but there actually was a clockwork machine gun in the WW1

My brother had an antique dueling pistol that used a wind up spring to give the flint hammer a bit extra oomph. Your design reminds me a lot of that.
