Description Reliquary is produced from copper, brass, and a bone from a small dog (no, I didn't kill it. It was already dead and only the complete skeleton was left.) The piece is roughly 2.25 inches long, 1 inch wide, and half and inch deep. I have always been fascinated with older unique pieces of jewelry with uncommon themes or designs. I tend to stop and look at the ones that seem to have a story to tell.

That is what I try to put into most of my pendant designs. Each one has an almost inherant history and story to tell.

Hopefully this one is successful at that. The idea was to make the bone appear special, and have some type of value. It is protected from its surroundings by a hard coffin shell. The lid of the coffin allows viewing of the inner passenger to those who look closer. The lid is also hindged and opens up to reveal the chains that keep the bone in place. The whole thing (minus the bone) was Patinated black. I went back with a brass brush to soften the finish, and used a polishing wheel to wear down the edges. The idea was a worn piece that has been around for a long time.

Although the piece looks completed, it is far from such. Due to some unforseen design flaws I am going to have to take it back apart and redo both the chains and bindings that hold the bone in the center.

"inherant history and story to tell."
This is what inspires the things I make too.

Awesome work!

Yet another item of interest and innovation that it has taken me an evil amount of time to see. Wonderous.

These should interest you in the extreme. The first link will send you to a set of Hand-Crafted Nunchakus of Bone, Shiny Copper, & Rusted Steel. These are the first of their kind, and currently may well be the only set in existence. [link] [link]

That remembers me at an exhibition in a museum I visited lately about blacksmithing in sacral art. There were large reliquery shrines, too.

Should've read all the comments first!
Sorry.

If you ever make another similar to this one, remember that I'd be willing to pay nearly any price for it. This is amazing, and I cannot honestly say that about many things I come across.

Once the studio opens up at the school again I had planned on producing another piece similar to this, I still have a lot of the bones left over that I want to make a lot of jewelry from. When I did make another one like this similar in size, I will be selling it for 250. There is a lot of work that goes into this one, but I feel it is worth it to produce several more to sell out into the world.

I'd be interested in buying one sometime. Offer is on the table anyway. I'm quite sure I could send some friends your way as well, if you'd like to make even more money. It's not every day you see a piece like this, and in such limited production, they are sure to become precious one day. A very good way to make a name for yourself indeed.

Interesting piece I can see alot of work must have gone into it. Really like the little latches.

I also like the idea of creating contemporary pieces which already have a sense of history and timelessness.

Very nicely exicuted, I would love to see the inside as well. I have wanted to create a Reliquary my self, but never imagined anything like yours. Great piece!

If you haven't seen it yet in my gallery I have a picture with the piece open. [link]

and another slowing a close up of the shackles. [link]

It was a very interesting piece to work on. I have designed a couple more Reliquary peices that are really diffenerent .

Also, thank you very much for calling it reliquary. I had not realized till now that I titled this and the other three images wrong and that they should be Reliquary with Bone, not Relique with Bone, I make silly mistakes like that all the time.

Very nice, I am impressed. Glad I was help full with the corrections. I never question titles. Artists name things in odd ways and for odd and or righteous reasons.

I must ask though, what is the need to change the chains holding the bone? too loose, too big, too small? Again I say most impressive work. I enjoyed cruising through your gallery as well. very fine work.

If your interested, I can point you to a company who will send you samples ( I think the cost is minimal for the sample kits) of some molding silicons that might help with your master mold needs for your carved ring number 6.

Thank you for sharing your work with me.

Although not pictured in any of the images, the riveting I did to attach the chain to the shellwas less than, hmm, for lack of a better term, impressing. The chain ended up being larger than I would have liked but because I was pressed for time and loosing interest in the piece, I went with them anyways. After this pendant I did inner workings where I was able to produce a chain half the size of this one successfully using a mini torch. I was happy with that scale and decided since I must redo the rivets, meaning I have to destroy most of the chain to do it anyways, I might as well redo them completely. Sometimes it is just easier for me to scrape and start new. I think I know of the mold material you are talking about. I have used it before. I tend to scavange a lot from around the metals studio, and no one has used the mold material that we haver right now, a hard sheet form that is used in vulcanizers (sp?). I have sucessfully as of late made a mold that works. I just need some silver now and remake the mold for the ring that I hope to have done by mid Feb in time for my BFA gallery show.

The company I believe is smooth on. they produce a very large amount of silicon variants to mold and cast from. Dragon skin is one of my favorites to play with. I have had some excellent results from it.

I understand about the scrap and start new game. I am normally very picky about what comes out of my shop. Lets say the streams around my home are very wealthy from offings from my lesser moments.

Thank you all for your comments. I have been designing this piece for the last 3 months and it means a lot to see a really positive reaction to it.

There is a sister pendant in the works too that features a bone half the size of this one. THe pendant is more square in shape. The idea for the two was a male and female pendant pair. Since I figured there would be some issues in the design I went to work on the larger one. Eventually I hope to have a couple of these to sell. But for now I will have to hold tight onto this one so I can get into graduate school with it.
