Description
“The world will put obstacles in your way. It is up to you, whether you have the strength and the will to knock them down.”
In the cold northern lands of Tarkania, the horsemen rule. They are a tribal people, uncivilized and uneducated. They are ruled by their men, with an iron fist. Females are less than property there. One might say they have taken the least attractive features of their southern neighbors, the Thunate and the Symballans, and made it barbaric and cruel. Their entertainment consists of horse races,… and the fighting pits.
Occassionally when females displease them, rather than beat them half to death, or simply decapitate them, they will throw them into the pits for a laugh. This is reserved for those who are mouthy, arrogant, or simply untrainable. Only in the very rare instance do they survive beyond their first fight. Those that do become something of an oddity. Despite the male dominance of the society, these few women are held in high regard,… as slave gladiators. Their fate is always to eventually die for the amusement of their male betters.
One such unfortunate managed to survive her first four boughts before facing a bear of a northman in the pit. He was a good foot taller than her and built like a Jouten. She suspected he was really just a Hobgoblin painted to look like a man. Were that the case, she might have died that day. Instead, the man saw something in her. Maybe he knew of her hidden talent. There was no way of knowing, and in the years afterwards, he would never speak of it. The monster of a Hergovite fought her well, but before the last blow, turned his weapons on the guards and the leering Tarkanian warlord that had captured him. The two were free,… along with a dozen other slaves. But Abaloft Fearlock, the towering northman, was felled by Tarkanian arrows and spears.
Quanara dragged the hapless hulk until she could drag him no more. Then she called on her only real friends, the beasts of the wild, to come aid her. She had some skills at surviving in the wilds, as did all her people, but her talent was better than most. She nursed the barbarian through the winter in a bear’s cave,… appropriate for such a bear of a man. In spring, they went forth to see the world anew. One day Abaloft brought strangers back to their cave, a tall Hergovite woman with hair of gold and a black skinned demon Drow. Together, they planned to head south and cross the mouth of the Symballan Sea, to a land where no Tarkanian warlords lived,… the western lands of Shabrund and Carellon.
