Oterma is a peculiar woman who believes she came from space and grew up with a pack of passimians. Needless to say, she’s a wild case. Growing up in the Alolan jungles has given her the skills and confidence to tackle any situation she faces with her wits and… Fists.

Oterma is very competitive and likes to prove her abilities. If she deems you a worthy opponent, she will challenge you to a fight, race, fruit tossing or any test of skills. While she is arrogant and thinks highly of her abilities, if she faces a loss, she will (after some confusion) beg of you to teach her. She can’t stand the idea of being bad at something.

Other than fighting and competing, Oterma doesn’t take things too seriously. Only things you really need, after all, is food, water and shelter. Oterma likes a good laugh and company of her closest friends. If she considers you as her friend, she’ll be very loyal and will not let you down, passimian’s honor! She will protect you and fight furiously for you. On the flipside, Oterma has very little patience for things and people that bore her. She gets easily annoyed when there is nothing to do and it's hard for her to just sit still. Only time she calms down is during the night when she observes the stars and space.

Oterma is the type to follow her instincts and use her brawn rather than her brain. If a meowth needs to be saved from a tree, she'll be climbing up there before you can even suggest finding a ladder. While she knows how to communicate in human language, she uses very simple language and if you talk using fancy long words, you can guarantee frustration and snarky remarks from Oterma’s side. She is open to learning about technology, but her short patience often causes problems with complicated learning. She is street smart but tackles problems like a wild animal would. Don’t expect good manners from her. She was raised in a jungle, after all.

Overall, Oterma might seem a difficult person to get along with and this might be true. But if you can put up and keep up with her though and rough exterior and manage to catch her interest, you got a loyal friend who's got your back and makes sure there's never a dull moment.

History:

It was a special night in Alola. The sky was clear and filled with stars. A pack of passimian had gathered to observe the vast celestial sphere at a wide opening deep in the jungle forest. Ah, the show started! Dozens of shooting stars filled the sky. The passmian riled up, cheered and started to toss fruits in synch with the shooting stars. A tradition of this pack. But as soon as the event had started, it was interrupted by a particularly bright shooting star. It was so close! And before any of the monkeys could even realize the star was heading towards Earth, a loud crashing sound exploded through the area.

After much panicking and screaming around in the passimian pack, the leader, named Hopo, calmed down his brethren and decided to investigate the source of noise. They approached the source carefully and found a peculiar scene! A weird pokemon… It was orange… With long tentacle like arms hovering there, above a crater. But as fast as the passimian saw the pokemon, it was gone just as fast, leaving only behind the crater and silence. The silence was broken by a cry. The crying was coming from the crater. Hopo approached the hole cautiously and at the bottom was a baby. A weird hairless monkey looking creature. A human? Hopo and his pack had only briefly seen humans but normally humans had pokemon traits in their body and they certainly didn’t come from space! The baby was crying again. Hopo and the pack knew they could not leave behind a helpless creature. Hopo’s mate, Kee, decided to adopt the baby as her second child. The baby was named Starf, as she came to them in a star.

Starf grew up among the passimian. She was especially close with her adoptive older brother, Payapa, who looked after her closely and taught her the ways of passimian. Despite being a different species, she adapted. After living with the pack and reaching approximately age of 2-year-old, her appearance changed and chimchar like traits appeared on her body. While not a passimian, the pack was joyous that they had influenced the baby’s totem and having a fellow monkey in their pack. Thanks to Starf’s new totem, her adaptation to the jungle life became much easier.

Years passed and Starf had become a fully-fledged member of pack, growing alongside her passimian brethren and the wild pokemon of the jungle. That was all she knew, and she had no complains. Life was good. Life was simple. But what she didn’t know what that one pokemon was going to change that.

The lush deep jungle was full of wild pokemon but there was one pokemon that was different, an elderly oranguru. An oranguru who used to belong to a human. The oranguru still lived in a small human made home and it was full of weird human items. The oranguru wasn’t social and stayed inside her house most of the time. But when the word from wild pokemon about a weird human like chimchar living in the jungle reached the oranguru’s ears, the elderly orangutang was determined to meet this human monkey.

It was not hard for the oranguru to find Starf and her brother, Payapa one day practicing fruit tossing. “Starf! Watch out! It is that weird oranguru!” Payapa communicated to his little sister. Starf found the oranguru’s staring unnerving and lashed out. “What do you want? You wanna fight?!” The teenage chimchar shouted and took a fighting pose. After a moment of silence, the oranguru pointed at the chimchar. “You are a human.” She communicated. “A what?” Starf was confused. “Do not listen to her!” Payapa was shocked and covered his little sister’s ears. “Come Starf! We leave!” The passimian insisted and Starf followed. But she gave a quick glance to the oranguru, who still stood there, never breaking an eye contact until Starf and Payapa were gone.

The same night, Starf sook out the oraguru on her own. She could not forget the words “you are human” the oranguru had said to her. "What is a human?” The chimchar repeated in her mind while jumping from tree to tree. It was a word she had heard tossed around a couple of times around her, but her parents never wanted to talk about it. “When you are older.” was always their answer. Well, Starf was tired of waiting around! And this oranguru clearly knew something!

Starf soon found the oranguru’s home. She had never seen a nest like this before. It was built from weird straight wood. And had a cover on top. It was old and almost taken over by the nature. Square holes on the side… With see through… ice? And what was this square wooden plank? AH! It opened! Behind the plank was the oranguru. “Come inside. I’ve been waiting for you.” She communicated and went back inside her nest, leaving confused Starf there. She did follow eventually and entered the nest after carefully examining the entrance. Inside, she was greeted by collection of items she had never seen before. Like a wooden structure that had food on. Wooden structures with even more items inside them. Weird white leaves with scribbles on them. But the most curious thing was a metallic box in a corner, with creatures moving inside of it. Starf examined it closer. It had a similar see through ice so she couldn’t touch the creatures inside. They didn’t even seem to react to her in any way! But Oterma was mesmerized by it none the less. There were pokemon inside the box. And creatures. Creatures that had pokemon like parts on their bodies, but they were clearly not pokemon. They looked like Starf’s reflection on water. She pointed at the creatures in box and looked at the oranguru. “Human?” She whispered. The oranguru nodded.

The next morning Starf confronted her pack and told what she had witnessed at the oranguru’s place. Her adoptive parents sighted. Had the day finally come? Hopo and Kee opened up and told Starf how they had found her and that she was a human. Starf, while shocked at first, regained her determination and asked permission to learn more about her race. The pack agreed.

For the next few years Starf spent time regularly with the oranguru, who taught her everything she knew about humans. With her telepathic skills, she was even able to teach Oterma to read and pronounce simple English words. By watching the box, what she now knew was called “a television” she learned more human language. She could watch hours and hours of oranguru’s old VHS tapes.

As Starf spent time with the oranguru, she learned more about the oranguru too. Starf learned that her old master was something called an astronomer and had come to the Alolan jungles to study space and stars at peace. The house was full of her master’s old equipment and notes about comets and constellations. The subject interested Starf too as according to her pack, she had come from space. So together they observed the space and stars, the master’s old diary and oranguru taught everything her master had taught her to Starf. The oranguru could not offer any explanation how Starf could possibly be from space, but with the help of her master’s notes, they managed to figure out the mysterious pokemon the passimian pack had seen that night was called a “deoxys”. Maybe that pokemon was the answer. Starf wanted to seek it out.

Starf made a decision. She wanted to learn more about humans and where she had come from. She had decided to leave the jungle. Her pack was sad but gave Starf their blessings and wished her farewells. Starf’s older brother, Payapa insisted coming with her and their parents agreed. Before leaving, the duo visited the oranguru who helped them to prepare. She provided Starf with her trainer’s old clothes. They barely fit but it was something so Starf wouldn’t march into human town almost naked. And most importantly, she provided Starf with a human name.

Oterma Monkebula.

Oterma, after a comet that oraguru’s master had noted to perihelion around Earth the date Starf had been discovered by her pack, her birthday. And last name after the oranguru’s own master. Oterma thanked the oranguru for everything with a deep hug. The oranguru thanked Oterma too for giving the old pokemon someone to teach and spread her wisdom to. The next morning, Oterma left the jungle for the first time in her life. Now a monferno totem, she was ready to face the world.

Oterma and Payapa laid low at the beginning, observing humans from far. They were curious but an odd bunch. Being pack animals, Oterma and Payapa eventually sook out human packs too. This led them to local Alolan punk and biker gangs. The fiery fighting duo easily proved that they were as rowdy as any punk and were welcomed to join them. While Oterma learned more about humans thanks to them, her view on authorities and especially police became a quite skewed. Oterma’s relationship with money especially was confusing. The oranguru had taught her about it but man was it confusing. None the less, she learned to earn money for necessary things such as clothes and traveling. Food and water the duo preferred to seek themselves. But whenever they did try human food, the monkey siblings were enamored. Saving up for buffets became a regular thing.

Some years went by and while Oterma learned more and more about humans, the good and the bads, she was nowhere close to figuring out where she came from. Turns out telling humans that she came from space just resulted in laughs and people thinking she was drunk or crazy. But one day she caught a rumor how a remote island called Raccolto was known for its mythical and legendary pokemon activity. That was it! She would need to find deoxys! And Raccolto would be the place! She now just needed to figure out how to get there. Luckily, that year the mayor of Raccolto was seeking out people to perform at the annual Fighting Competition. That was perfect! Oterma managed to join Team Turnip who was hired for the event and got her free ticket to Raccolto!

Oterma and Payapa arrived at Raccolto and after some fun and fighting against the local authorities, Oterma discarded her Team Turnip badge and stayed behind. She had no plans to leave just yet. She laid low for a while, aside some run-ins with the locals and authorities. Oterma and Payapa’s goal was to seek out these so-called legendary pokemon and Gods. There was no luck. But giving up was one word Oterma never learned. It seemed like the duo was going to need to stay here for a while. That meant settling down and getting a job. Well, that was no

fun. Even thinking about it hurt the monferno’s brain. She needed to unwind and fight a bit! It had been too long. Anyone who would happen to come across their path would be challenged to a fight. And it so happened to be this strong looking incineroar woman. Oterma and Pyapa just had to fight her and challenged her.

They got their asses kicked hard.

Oterma was impressed. Never had she been beaten so badly. She HAD TO learn this inceneroar woman’s techniques. Oterma and Payapa begged for her to teach them. Lucky for them, the woman, named Rune Everett, was planning to open a dojo and needed employees. A job where Oterma could fight and kick butt? Count her in!

And so, Oterma had figured out her job situation and even managed around to get herself a plot to live in. She was now ready to start a life in Raccolto and maybe finally figure out where she came from.

Bio:

Payapa is not really a pet. He is Oterma’s older brother. The two grew up together and are close as one can get and are rarely seen apart. Of course, growing up as siblings, they do also bicker and fight. But always resolve in the end. While Oterma is not the sharpest tool in the shed, she is smarter than Payapa and thus gets to call the shots. Still, Oterma considers him her equal and Payapa is not caught in a pokeball or anything. He comes and goes ash he pleases. Payapa is big and burly and likes to show off his strength. His helmet is full of signs of his past battles and there’s also one scar on his right eye. How did he get it? Oterma and Payapa change the story each time.

Trivia

Talents:

Growing up with passimians, her ability to throw items is amazing.

• Can read body language and verbal cues from monkey pokemon and understand them.

• She is very loud and can mimic multiple pokemon cries.

• Can survive in the wilderness no problem.

• Eats like a snorlax. Her metabolism is on fire.

• Is very quick on her feet.

Funfacts:

Names her pokemon after (pokemon) berries, just like her passimia pack did.

• She does not catch pokemon in pokeballs and instead convinces them or lets them join her pack.

• While a monferno, she likes to dress up in passimian inspired clothes and even dyes her hair light green to match her passimian brethren’ helmets. She also sticks leaves on her body in her family pack’s pattern.

• She generally prefers light and little clothing. Thanks to her fire typing, she resists cold pretty well but needs to dress up more for actually snowy environments.

• Payapa still refers to Oterma by her pack given name; Starf. Oterma introduces herself by her human name but doesn’t mind anyone using “Starf” if someone somehow learns about her original given name.

• She wears a moon stone around her neck.

• While she can recognize stars and constellations in the sky, do not expect her to remember their actual names.

• Can fire and fry food but anything fancy and especially baking is something she’s bad at.

• She and Payapa are inspired by Vegeta and Nappa. DBZ and Sayans in general inspired the whole “monkey from space” theme of this literation of Oterma.
