Description I was recently inspired by some of Gil Elvgren's glamour pin-ups. Pinups don't always have to be in bathing suits or wind-blown skirts. I referenced this pose from a photo I found of Dita v. Teese, but I decidedly made it not look like her. Oh, and yes, it is also intentional that she's not visibly sitting on something, even though physics would tell us that she is. It's a personal choice and also influenced from some of Vargas' works that made me want to paint her floating on (apparently) thin air.

Photoshop & Wacom done in one day.

Bitte mach dir keine Sorgen.

Bitte mach Dir wirklich keine Sorgen!

WitchiArt In reply to tanabatablossom [2008-10-29 05:57:59 +0000 UTC]

Sorry this took me so long to comment but now that my dad is finally in a rehab facility I have a little bit more time.

I love this one too! I like the pose, I love the dress, and I like the backdrop you did on this; simple and effective.

No problem, Sis! I know you've been really busy lately, and I'm sorry to hear about your Dad.

Thank you for the sweet comment, and I'm glad you like it.

Aww, thanks Jess! When I finished this one I was also really happy with it, though I wish I'd made the bg a bit darker in the yellow tone. Oh well. I loved doing the shoes, and had to give them a red sole (you know, a tribute to Christian Louboutin ) I am keeping them coming ... I just uploaded a new one that you might like even more than this one.

You're welcome! I think the bg looks great, the high contrast works well for this kind of subject--each one keeps getting better and better, and I'm sure your hubby loves this niche you've found!

Aww, thank you!! I'm not so sure if each one gets better than the last. I seem to have my moments where I lose the initial excitement and interest in what I was painting that I make mistakes that show, and thus ruin a piece that could have been really good. But I'll wait until you've seen the latest piece for us to hash this out further. I started out with a "meh" feeling, but then it sort of got more interesting and I changed a dozen things while working on it and it began taking shape, in a really good way. Before I knew it I had fallen in love with the painting. You know how there's "that" stage in a painting where everything just looks terrible. Sometimes I have a bit of trouble overcoming that stage and telling myself that it will get better.
I think he really likes it after my latest piece.

Don't get discouraged! Are you using references for all of these?? Because you have that vintage look and feel down pat, from the hair, accessories, makeup, everything! And oh yeah, I totally understand the "meh" stage--I'm there with the ~huilin 's panther piece Perhaps we could call that the artist-block stage?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

tanabatablossom In reply to ellastasia [2008-10-14 17:45:05 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I use references. Since these ladies were way before my time, I've had to look at photos of clothes, appliances, hairstyles, etc. of that particular era to get the feel of that period, and also which colors were pre-dominant. With all that research, I don't have to rely so heavily anymore on references for clothes and colors. Most of the bathing suits and bikinis covered up more than they revealed, the dresses were all roughly similar, same goes for the hair. But if I draw household appliances and furniture, I'd have to rely heavily on references to get it right.
Yeah, I'd call that the artist-block stage. It happens every time. You just have to push through it. Sometimes with force.

Ooooh! I love those shoes!! I have a hard time with shoes...you really nailed them here! You did a nice job making the jewelry sparkle as well!!

tanabatablossom In reply to MidoriiBlue [2008-10-10 00:40:17 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much Rissa! The jewelry and shoes aren't really hard to do at all. They're probably the quickest and easiest areas to do. As for the shoes, I gave them Christian Louboutin signature red soles (though they probably didn't exist back then). I'm glad you like the painting! Thank you!

I like your set of pinups

Cute pose! I love the legs and shoes, and I prefer the wider range in skin tones from shaded to highlight, in this picture compared to the others. I makes the image more dynamic.

Thank you very much!
Thank you for letting me know what you like about the painting. It lets me know which direction to take when coloring it. And I have to agree with you. I like the way this one turned out, and I did pay more attention to details and took my time which shading. It seems I learn something new or different with every piece until I find the right method for me. Your comment is deeply appreciated!

LOL! That's just the way she posed in the photo. I must admit it does look uncomfortable. I tried getting in the same pose and promptly got a cramp. But thank you very much, Sis!

I want the shoes too, only maybe not quite so high

I like the way that in some of those old pinups
they have say, a chair or phone or even shoes
but they are just drawn in outline, (usually red)
and not coloured or shaded.
Have you thought about trying that effect ?
I'm going to try that out one day.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

tanabatablossom In reply to blurhead [2008-10-03 01:08:01 +0000 UTC]

LOL, yes I've seen those. I think it's a nice effect. I don't think it's something for me though because I'm not a great artist. If I did it, it would only look like I was too lazy to complete it.

Ha ha good point Michelle. (not about not being a great artist!)
sorry I meant that it may look unfinished, I suppose there is
that possibility, but I just love that effect every time I see it !
