Description Warhammer 40k - Eternal Crusade fanart
Made for the Strike Force Ultra group, who will fly under the Ultramarine chapter. Although I did add a chaplain to the pic, its not known if we will get one later (not at launch, nope), still, couldn’t resist. Plus they look epic to boot.
Win-win ^^

From left to right, top to bottom the characters and their companies are as follows:
Cpt. Oculus, 3rd Company, red trim, leader of the Strike Force
Cpt. Algernon, 1st Company, white trim, leader of the 1st Veteran Company
Sergeant Saur, 5th Company, black trim
Meridius, 2nd Company, gold trim
Phyllionell, 1st Company, white trim
Reithas, 2nd Company's Chaplain, gold trim

Some more WH40k stuff will be coming!
Have fun until then!

Awwww
Thanks a lot ^^ Well, my only gripe with Ultramarines as they are nearly the only well known SM chapter, being the poster boys for this faction x)
Hence they show up in nearly all of the games Which does make them a bit boring after some time tho
But aside of that, they are cool I guess

Blood Ravens are another chapter that often is shown for a long series of video games, of course they arenΒ΄t as popular, but itΒ΄s the second in the list of well known poster chapters, only after that the typical chapters we all know come in popularity

Yeah, true
Personally I'd love to see some other chapters like... Dark Angels, White Scar, Salamander, hell even Black Templars, Black Ravens have a really solid background the devs could use It would be nice for a change ^^
Same goes for the Chaos Marines though. Its quite annoying that we always see mostly Black Legion XD

Some people are just afraid of doing something else if that what they already have is working.
For myself I donΒ΄t like Ultramarines that much, becouse the normal marines cling to the book too much that roboute guiliarme(I donΒ΄t know how to spell him) wrote.
ItΒ΄s seems like some sort of religion and the imperior "loves" religion, doesnΒ΄t he?
I really respect thse Ultramarines that know that this book isnΒ΄t the only way and adapt to the situation, but they always end up being either banned (send to death missions) or taken by the inquisition becouse of some questionable reasons (the game space marine)

Yep, just wanted to say Space Marine game
Thats prime example of what happens when zealots meet a normal thinking guy who thinks out of the box xD
And true, Guilliman wrote that book, the Codex Astartes, which is an overly-explained rulebook for idiots in short. It was ment to generalise the SM structure, to avoid anything like the Horus Heresy again.
While it does served its purpose, its quite a narrow minded view on things, as our hero in the Space Marine game points out in the end quite accurately xD

I think Ultramarines have potential, but I only read sad things or about heros that get send away. DidnΒ΄t read any Book about them that had anyone intresting not send away but Marneus augustus calgar.

Well I havent delved into their lore too much or to be more exact: the lore of the space marines in general. They are like a modern, sci-fi knights of sorts.
Its just they move around in power armor instead of an iron one xD
So I'm not quite familiar with most of their notable figures, aside of their primarch ofc

I love to play story with each game I play, for that I have to know what the armys I play are, I was used to play ultramarines but somewhen many years ago I change them into Salamander, normally it is bad to overpaint miniatures, but they really needed that and look way better now than they used to look.
So yeah I love Lore

Tanathiel In reply to TheBl4ckCat [2015-06-22 14:48:08 +0000 UTC]

Oh yes, Salamanders can look quite epic
Seen some custom paints where they used firely cracks at certain parts of the armor (like legs, shoulders, shields, etc.) and it looked amazing

Looks like members of the Third and First Companies are giving the enemy hell. Was that intentional or do the colors of the trim of their pauldrons not matter?

Tanathiel In reply to Wildchild300 [2015-04-16 16:46:08 +0000 UTC]

Hehhe no, the pauldorns coloring does have its reasons and intentions:

From left to right, top to bottom the characters and their companies are as follows (at least this was the info I was given ^^):
Cpt. Oculus, 3rd Company, red trim, leader of the Strike Force
Cpt. Algernon, 1st Company, white trim, leader of the 1st Veteran Company
Sergeant Saur, 5th Company, black trim
Meridius, 2nd Company, gold trim
Phyllionell, 1st Company, white trim
Reithas, 2nd Company's Chaplain, gold trim

So yea ^^

Indeed and they all role playing their characters for some time now, so they all have a background
For example, while I was doing the other parts of the drawing, Reithas back then was just a simple SM veteran with a stormshield and power sword When I got to him, the guys told me that in the meantime he managed to get to Chaplain status in their games. Hence why he is a Chaplain now ^^

you are brave to upload such high resolution without any watermark included
and still your colours are not giving out your best ><
amazing detailing, great patience for everything but the colours not giving out the depth well

Tanathiel In reply to Widdershins-Works [2015-04-16 16:36:39 +0000 UTC]

Well... if anybody would want to steal it, they would eventually find a way. May fate reward them in kind. It will. Plus I'm not that known yet for this to be a concern. There are plenty of other great artists that works are usually a target for such a thing Besides, its a lot smaller then the original (Which is around 8000x4500px-ish, since they wanted a poster size )

As for the colors: its part of the area I still need to work on. Compositions and colors are my achilles heels right now and I my best efforts are usally partially working out. Still, I think I need only a few advice and ideas how to use it better and I think I'm set ^^ And thats experience, wich will come eventually Until then, its a bit hit-or-miss until I figure it out ^^
Its sometimes hard to figure things out on my own

Widdershins-Works In reply to Tanathiel [2015-04-19 12:52:04 +0000 UTC]

You know there is a way for hidden watermark your images which cant be removed that easily? In the binary code thing it writes your name in which by eyes unseen but with the program which can work with that will recognize from every computer?

Yeah the composition here a bit falling apart, they all almost face a different direction and it makes the viewer eyes collapse on what to focus and the story of the whole work sadly while the details are outstanding and really great. I also understand it is not easy to work with this many characters on one image together.Β
You should try looking for colour tutorials and composition ones - I also learnt all by myself and composition was for years long a huge deal to me (being a character artist not scenery or real illustrator) so I know how hard it is when you learn everything by yourself without school or support behind you!
But my advice, go do radical things because radical concepts the ones will force you to stand up and hold your own position and leading to bigger development. Step by step only work, once you challenged yourself, the step by step is to how to prove yourself on a field which is out of the comfort zone. I started to do fake screeshots to push myself further force myself to make background and place a cartoony figure ON the background the way it can fit and it slowly led me to learn how to compose not only illustration but how to support it with my colour choice. Nobody told me how to - I jumped in the deep water and it brought me faster and better improvement then anything else

Hm, nope didnt know about that hidden watermark. How/where to implement it? I think it would be worth the hassle

Hm, well I tried to use your paintover you did last time for me, to make it work. However, the idea was that they face a frontline, so they are spreading out. Plus, to some extent I followed the usual routine of the "pyramid" space marine drawing, the only difference is that they are not on the top of a hill and sorrounded by a swarm of tyranid/ork/"insertrandomenemyfaction" While composition-vise it would look better if they'd all face the same direction, the scene itself would make it look totally silly. Since they just breached a perimiter, which is not a small corridor or something. Still, I understand that this would've need some tweaking and I agree.
I just cant grasp the composition as an idea. I did look up books and whatnot, but the basic ideas of the composition menthods (like golden rule or the rule of thrids) are good, but I can't understand how to compose. I know there should be lines in my head, about where they look, how the different items position themselves to eachother, the light/dark areas, etc. I've eaten though a few books in this topic but so far this is as close as I can get on my own.

Yea, going out of my comfort zone is a top priority. Even with this drawing I've gone out, quite far, since I've needed to work with multiple characters + I had to extabilish a background of some sort. Right now I started to dabble into matte painting, which covers one of my biggest lacking area: backgounds. I always tried to challenge myself drawing after drawing, some succeeded, some... dont. I just need a bit push/advice so I can get to the right direction.
One thing is to know about something and an entirely different beast when it comes to implement said knowledge. Composition and colors are the two main areas that I'm struggling to implement the way I'd want. I have a picture in my mind, what I'd like it to look like, but most of the time I can't fully do it. Which is frustrating as heck.
