Description
Name: Languila
Languid (ill) + Anguila (eel) = Languila
(A bit on the nose, but I like it. It rolls off the tongue nice.)
Monster Class: Snake Wyvern
Locales: Coral Highlands, Rotten Veil, Hoarfrost Reach, Frozen Seaway, Frost Islands (nonmigrating)
Prey: Raphinos, Shamos, Girros, zamite, Fish, Squid
Top text:
Languila skin becomes darker when they hunt to hide better in dark environments. Aside from its mesmerizing blue light show that draws prey in closer, the only visible colors on its body are red; which is out side the visible range of its prey; much like how deer cannot see a tiger’s orange body. Their most common prey item is Raphinos.
When defending themselves, Languila will gulp up water and spray it at attackers, as well as use their pouch like a battering ram. When enraged, they’ll regurgitate some of their stomach contents into their mouth to make a sickening stew that eats away at flesh. Languila are born around the boiling pools of the Rotten Veil and similar environments, and are immune to and carry the bacteria responsible for the miasma; which they use to aid in digestion.
When their pouch is empty, they attack by flailing their spiked tail lure around, and by snapping their jaws.
Side text:
Languila are anadromous serpents. They make a long journey from the freezing depths to the center of the New World, often bringing treasures of the deep, and unidentifiable creatures in their stomachs. Their journey from the edge of the New World to its center is fairly short; using the maze like network of caves to reach the Rotten Veil within only a couple days. Some accidentally end up in the Coral Highlands before continuing their journey into the depths. All migrating Languila appear to be female.
The skin is porous, moist and slippery. The first individuals of Languils were discovered on accident. A corpse of a large female was found washed up on the rocky shores of the Hoarfrost Reach. The guild sent several researchers to investigate the remains. A couple much smaller animals were caught in fishing nets around the same time the corpse was discovered. Due to differences in morphology, they were orginally thought to be different species. It took twenty years to discover that they were just males. They were entirely black, much smaller, and had heavily reduced limbs. Additionally they lacked horns, a lure, photophores, and the long dorsal spines of the female. The fishermen noted they would never fight back, and always tried to flee the boat.
Other Notes:
Since their discovery, there have been a few reports of strange trailing lights "slithering" across arctic regions at night. These reports seem to coincide with upsurges in Zamite and Zamtrios reports; along with strange piles of meat. There are a few century old reports similar to this, and the guild was worried that they may need to prepare for the appearance of another Nakarkos. Thankfully, this new monster appears to be the culprit. Encounters with these monsters is becoming more common thanks to advancements in exploration and science. Reports from the Frozen Seaway and Frost Islands may be females just starting their migration to the New World; and hopefully not fleeing from something big and hungry underwater.
