I was thrilled to be able to do something a little different than I usually get commissioned for. Not enough people ask for the “non poplar” animals, which are actually the animals with dear reverence in Aboriginal societies- so I was excited to take on this project.

Featured here:
A Crested Toad does battle with an Armed Snake.
Each is juxtaposed to another- the Toad seizing the Snake from the back, all the while the Snake has the Toad by the foot.

I decided to use the mandela shape as the base for the image- simply because I wanted something that could symbolize the unity between two bodies at war- that is a paradox in itself. I also wanted to get that strained confining feel by trying to have everything “fit in the circle” that could also reflect the strain and the physical labor of a confrontation.

This has become a favorite piece in my neck of the woods. I’m considering to make a few more based on the same concept, as they are proving popular with the crowd here.

For some reason, this makes me think of the myth about Jörmungandr, even though this image is in no way related to it at all... =/

Regardless, this is quite lovely -- I've looked at some of your other images similar to this one, and the level of respect you have for the culture behind them is just astounding. Well done.

Love the art, hate the name.
My art teacher uses it all the time when trying to get me to draw realistically.
Feh.
I LOVE YOUR ART!!

Well, maybe you should listen to your teacher. I only ever got better when listening to mine- even the ones telling me a painful reality. ESPECIALLY those that told me a painful reality. XD

The colors work together in harmony here. They don't overpower one another, but really show a definitive character for both the snake and toad. It is definitely refreshing to see such unique animals conveyed in this style. I get what you were trying to convey in the mandela formation. I think it was a brill choice. It really shows that duality and continuity you find within struggles. Wonderful work. (:

Thank you!
While Toads and Frogs are a common symbol on the NWP- many families and crests have them- it's not perpetuated in the non-community media, as the non Aboriginal don't think fondly of reptiles, or amphibians. it's a pity becuase they are some of the most awesome creatures out there!

Thanks for the wonderful comment!
