Description

Etsy listing here ----> [link]

This listing is for a braided horsehair bracelet in bay/black. The hair was collected by me from a stallion named "The Rock" who was siezed from his owner due to neglect. After a few months of appropriate food, water and shelter he has been transformed into a beautiful animal with a huge personality! This bracelet is 7 1/2 inches in length and closes with a lobster clasp. It would be appropriate for any lover of horses, male or female.

All of my horsehair items are handmade by me using horsehair gathered from animals encountered through my work in the animal welfare field. Only a small amount is taken from each horse during the normal grooming process. Each animal is an individual who's memory lives on in the items made from their hair, even after the animal has passed through my life. All my horsehair is cruelty-free, is not a by-product of the equine slaughter industry and is vegetarian/vegan friendly.

For each purchase of a horsehair bracelet, $5 will be donated to Team Kareem, an animal welfare group dedicated to helping the pyramid horses, donkeys and camels of Cairo, Egypt. If you aren't familiar with their work I recommend that you visit their website at [link] .

This is absolutely lovely! How well would these hold up to every day wear? And can you do necklaces this way? I'd love to have one to hang my bronze bear pendant from (I wear it every day)

It should hold up pretty well - I made one for a friend and she's worn it every day for several months. This is a slightly different technique then my old bracelets but the glue I use to seal the braided ends and attach components is the same. I tried as hard as I could to get the endcap off of this one and wasn't able to budge it. I think the jump rings would be more likely to give way then the horsehair. It's pretty tough stuff!

As for a necklace, I'm currently working on one for myself out of hair from my own horse. Depending on how long you wanted it, it would either have to be extended with jewelry chain at the clasp or have a double sliding knot clasp or something. I've never made a necklace using this particular braid before so I'll have to report back once the one I'm working on is finished.

Was concerned about the individual strands of the horse hair fraying/separating from the braid. If it works out, I'd definitely be interested in one for my pendant. It has a fairly small loop on it, but I should be able to thread a larger one through it to connect it to a new chain. Do let me know!

Oh the hair doesn't fray or seperate unless it gets broken somehow, and that's not easy. It's about the same tensile strength as fishing line, depending on how coarse the hair is, and that's before it's braided together. When assembling the strands of the braids I count the individual hairs out and trim them all down to the same length before I even start the braid. The last 1/2 inch or so is sealed with good ol' superglue.
