Personality:
Loyal
It may come as s surprise, but above all things, King is loyal to his people. As his situation changes he's learned to adapt to new leaders and tribes, but his fidelity does not naturally come with benevolence. He is tolerant, but rarely is he kind.
Paranoid
King is very distrusting toward the general public. No stranger is a friend, and any kindness shown towards him is a ploy to deceive him. This mentality has kept him alive over the years and he has no interest in changing his twisted thinking. Though he feels it to be a great protection, it has also left him very lonely...
Aggressive
King has always been an aggressive, dominant male, but he has become a bit more tame with age. He may not be so eager to start a fight, but he certainly knows how to handle himself in one.
Stoic
King feels that feelings only get in the way of survival. He learned long ago that taking things personally- putting emotions before logic- will only cause more harm. King keeps all his pain and fear and lonesomeness stuffed inside of him so as to protect himself from others who might try to extort his feelings.
Guilty
King is very shameful of his past and is always worried to meet someone he may have hurt or someone that knows of his past dealings. He doesn't want to be that person anymore, but he knows it would take a miracle for anyone to change their view of him.
Backstory:
King was born to a pair of American bulldogs along with the 8 other pups in his litter. As breeding stock, his parents held little value in the children as they new they'd be taken from them within a few months, yet the whole family still had a sort of cold, all encompassing bond with one another. King found much enjoyment with his family and the human who owned them, and would later grow up to realize that the time he spent with them would be the happiest days of his life- perhaps the only truly happy days of his life. The months came and went faster than anyone hoped, and soon all the pups were adopted. King was among one of the first to go, and watching his parents and siblings not even bother to move a muscle as he yelped for help behind the bars of a carrier was heartbreaking. He learned that day how everything, every joy in your life, can all go away so quickly- too quickly to bear. For the first few weeks King sulked around in his new home, moping on the floor, only getting up to eat or drink or go on an unwanted walk with his human. His new owner tried everything to make him happy, and after a month, King finally gave in and decided to allow himself to love his new companion. In his eyes, his family had abandoned him, so there was no point grieving over the loss of those who had clearly forgotten him. Once the baby bulldog's spirits had lifted, his owner gave him the world- decking him out with clothes and accessories, and feeding him lots of treats and tasty food. He'd take the dog anywhere he could (mainly just to show him off) and King loved the attention.
It wasn't until King's owner found a mate when his life truly hit rock bottom. It was almost as if that woman caused him to forget about the dog. She stole all his time from him, and her cold stares startled King. He didn't know what he was doing wrong. King tried his best to get his owner's attention any chance he got, but the second that woman came into their house it was as if he meant nothing to the man anymore...and then their was the baby. That baby caused King to never go on another walk, to lay in his bed alone all day waiting for someone to notice him, to go hungry because his owner was too busy to feed him. He was almost completely forgotten-- and even loathed. That woman was nothing but trouble from the moment she stepped into his house, and her constant glaring and subtle, snide remarks only grew more poignant and more frequent as time went on. Finally, to the point where he was exiled from his own home.
King liked to imagine it was all the woman's idea, but with the way his owner had been treating him those last few months... that probably wasn't true. Either way, King stuck around in the yard for a while after he was kicked out. Sometimes the woman would go outside and throw things at him and he'd run away, only to come back a few hours later. With all the neglect, he was desperate for attention, even if it came from someone who clearly wanted nothing to do with him. Aside from the occasional projectiles, the only thing that tore him away from his former home was his voracious hunger.
After begging, stealing, and fighting for food for a few weeks, only to go back to a home where he was plainly unwelcome, King had a change of heart. Something had snapped, broken, inside him, something that couldn't be fixed even if he wanted it to be. All the brawling and betrayal had torn him up inside and out and he hadn't even noticed until it finally destroyed him. King's heart was now clenched by an intense black fire, and he let the flame rage within him. He learned his lesson- there was no point loving people, trusting in anyone. His feelings only brought him pain his entire life, so he threw them out. He left those people that had forsaken him and took the first train he could catch to where ever it was going. He just wanted to get away from it all.
King ended up settling in the small town of Canindale. It was fairly quite, not too much trouble from humans or animals, but life was always a struggle for the stray. Struggle didn't describe the half of it. After some time roaming around the town, calamity struck as King scavenged off of one meticulously placed piece of quality meat that had him out cold, rattling around in the back of a truck within the hour. And thus began his career in the ring orchestrated by several sneaky gangs strewn around town. They pay was good, but the work was brutal, and it wasn't long before King became known as one of the best in the business. King wasn't opposed to follow this living arrangement, not that he had much of a choice regardless. When he wasn't resting in a kennel with his meals he was only ever training to stay in shape for the next fight.
His only stroke of luck came with police sirens. The whole operation got busted and all the dogs sent to temporary holding while their court cases were processed. It came as a surprise to everyone that the giant bulldog was completely tame. But what they saw as tameness was truly catatonia. King was tired, traumatized, hurt, and again, alone. He didn't have any fight left to fight back with. He sat in his jail cell at the pound for months, never speaking, and only moving when he had to. Eventually a kind girl took notice of him and he was soon on his way to the countryside to start the next chapter of his life.
