You guys are both soooo amazing! Loved seeing you at Fanime. Especially your Courtesan, it looks so perfect and I just don't know how. Like, how did you get those black triangle trim pieces, is it ribbon, fabric?...

tasukigirl In reply to AuroraMaryte [2011-06-25 02:08:05 +0000 UTC]

Ack! The trim. That triangle trim in particular was killer. The top is heavy paper with fabric glued on top of it. I created a stencil, drew it onto the fabric and cut it by hand. My exacto knife and I became very good friends during the making of this costume.

It was rather time intensive, but I suppose the result was worth it.

It definitely was. O.O
I was just wondering because my sister is making the Courtesan..and has been frantically looking for ribbons or lace in the exact shapes of the trims the Courtesan has(like the triangle one you've got, or that gold one that kinda has an arrow shape..she's doing the normal version of the Courtesan). I told her it wasn't possible to find it, but I didn't know how we could go about making the trims without them fraying like all hell at the edges. And yours looks flawless so...I had to ask.

Yeah, she has some tough trims to find. You can't see it too well, but the diamond trim down the front is also hand cut. I know what trim you're talking about for the skirt. I made a stencil and painted the pattern in gold paint. This costume took me a few months to make and most of that time was spent on the trims.

Um...sorry to ask, but actually, could you tell me HOW you painted the gold parts? We were going to use ribbon, but that is a hassle and takes forever to cut properly, and now I know there's another option, thanks to you.
So, what kind of paint did you use? Acrylic with a brush, or spray paint, or...? How did you use the stencil you made, just lay it on the fabric and paint section by section?
I just know I'll wind up having to do the ribbon if we use that, since I have all the experience from my Jihl costume. I'd much rather have my sister just paint, but paint can be messy, so I needed to find out how you did all of this...because we're running low on the pink fabric, and no place sells it anymore.

The pattern is repeating. There is a stripe that you can add to the very bottom with ribbon. The top part needs to be stenciled on. Since my skirt curves I only drew a segment onto poster board, cut it out (exacto) and kept repeating that. I used gold acrylic paint because of the fabric I was using, but spraypaint is probably a lot easier. I didn't risk it because I have no balcony and my apt is carpeted. Just make sure you cover up EVERYTHING you don't want painted.

Does that make sense?

AuroraMaryte In reply to tasukigirl [2011-07-07 04:36:47 +0000 UTC]

Yes, it definitely does. I figured the stencil had to be only a small piece, and you would use it to paint one section, then move it over to the next section and paint that..
And posterboard, that's a good idea..I probably would have given her paper to use, lol.
I think we'll stick with acrylic if you did. I was just wondering which you used... but spray paint can flake all over if someone isn't super careful, we always use it for our props, and sometimes colors get where they shouldn't, even if we meticulously cover up everything that shouldn't be painted.
It makes perfect sense, and thank you so much!! We have 3 weeks...I would have been up each night til like 5am if I had to cut ribbons into the shapes and glue them on. This helps sooo much.

The stencil can get messy too if you're not careful. Test the paint first though. My fabric was pretty slick so acrylic worked well on it and I could use an exacto to scrape off dried paint if I was careful. Your fabric is likely different. A fabric paint might work just as well. Also, acrylic can be a little thin so sometimes more than one layer is necessary, but again, this was because my material was black.

If you're really in a hurry, there is also gold sharpy permanent markers. It won't be as glossy/shiny, but it will give you more control and all you have to do is color.

Good luck!

Anywho, I've been meaning to ask. What kind of material did you use for the black? It looks like pleather, I like it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

tasukigirl In reply to AnimeFreakKai [2011-06-14 07:06:46 +0000 UTC]

It's actually not pleather. It's a nylon/elastene blend that they use in American Apparel clothing quite often. I originally got a skirt from them, took it down to fashion district and matched the fabric when I did my Beast cosplay. I had a lot leftover so I used it for Fiora.

Good thing I had enough. I'm not sure I could find it again.
