Description Build Notes:

So with the main gun barrel assembled and affixed firmly to the base I cut out of a garden broom head, I've started work on the scythe blade itself;

If you recall from my previous update I was talking about how this prop needed to be as light weight and durable as possible for the cosplayer to comfortably wield and swing in a performance.

A method I like use to achieve this is taken from IKEA furniture design philosophy, which is to hot glue cardboard fins inside hollow sections, especially useful when you have big hollow sections in a prop that can be sealed up later and hidden from view as in the case of this here scythe.

Just by gluing a sufficient number of fins and making sure the grain on the cardboard is going the same way, your prop will still be light weight but far more stronger and less flimsy and prone to wobbling mid swing.

As for the outer body of the scythe head a lot of this involved mainly just cutting out and laminating together sheets of PVC plastic and then adding raised details with sheets of Wonderflex, I should note Wonderflex has two sides to it, a smooth side and a woven fibered side so when cutting your cutting out your transferred templates make sure you mirror the pieces to match the side you want to be facing out...trust me it'll save you the frustration and wasted material.

To glue all the parts together I've use mainly epoxy glue, which comes in a tiny tube that has two nozzles on it , simply mix the two solutions and smear on with a popsicle stick, the glue cures in 5 minutes for a very strong bond,

I found the Epoxy glue is very useful to stick the wonderflex details to the plastic as it has a strong bond but does not involve a great deal of heat as in the case of hot glue.

I would not recommend hot glue when gluing wonderflex as due to the its nature wonderflex is very susceptive to heat, so a hot glue gun will result in warping and ugly bubbles forming under the surface.

Looks great! Just wondering if you still have all the patterns. My younger sister wants to go to a anime convention as Rwby. My wife is making the costume and I seem to somehow have gotten stuck with the making the scythe. I would appreciate any help or advise you may have. Compensation could be provided for the patterns. Thanks

I don’t know if you’ve had a read of the write-up yet, that’ll give you a rundown of the build process and possibly give you some ideas you could to try out.

Going into this a lot of my references came mainly from screenshots of the trailer and this still from a really well done GIF ; I also found these videos very helpful starting out to get a better understanding of how it might eventually come together.

All I can really advise is make the base frame strong and rigid as you possibly can, the more it is, the less it’ll sag under the weight of what ever material you choose to attach to it and be far more stable to handle.

Thanks a bunch

My word going into this I didn't think it would be as time consuming as it has turned out to get to this point
