Description Build Notes:

Pattering for armour

When making any kind of armour it is always essential to make a paper mock up of what it is you intend to make before you go about actually cutting the final material. Taking your time and putting the effort into this step ensures that you scale the piece to fit you correctly from both a practical and aesthetic standpoint, but most importantly it saves you a lot of time and money on not cutting up randomly and wasting the more expensive material.

Starting off through trial and error I built up the base of the gantlets using cut outs of cardboard and masking tape.

After I was happy with the look and fit of the base gauntlets I then transferred the templates to sheets of EVA foam gym floor mats which were then cut out with the aid of a metal ruler and hobby knife.

Gym/workshop EVA foam mats are much thicker and rigid than their yoga and exercise roll counterparts, making them ideal for armour.

A property of all EVA foams as a material is it is very susceptible to intense heat, as it warps and shapes when exposed to it. With the use of a heat gun I was able to bend the flat stiff pieces into the curved shapes needed by first heating up the surface with the gun and then bending it whilst allowing it to cool into the new shape.

EVA foam is also very reactive to super glue forming and almost instantaneous and very strong bond which is how all the pieces were attached to one another.

For the section above the hand that I decide to build up with outer covering sheets of PVC as I’ll have to attach the gun barrel muzzles later on.

Next step from here is to start doing the shotgun shell bandolier of both gauntlets and then the top level covering, so like always do stay tuned.

I’m wondering how did you do the front part? I saw it was coated with something shiny, what is that and is the foam front one solid piece?

What are the measurements for this so that I could scale them to myself. And how thick is the EVA foam that you are using?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Tatsutetsu In reply to comex319 [2013-08-07 12:01:47 +0000 UTC]

Roughly 40cm from tip to end, the foam about 12cm thick

I love your builds, and the fact that they are so user-friendly. So if others want to make there own they can. You have inspired me to attempt to make my own. Is thatΒ the part at the top where the hand goes wood? Β And where do you get your EVA Foam?

Thank you that is amazing to hear

If I may ask, where did you get the Gym mat to cut apart from?

I've been looking for a way to make Yang's gauntlets that will make them feel best since i'm doing a Yang cosplay my self and your method seems to be the most effective if not easiest.

Tatsutetsu In reply to Dingo-Sniper [2013-06-28 22:32:08 +0000 UTC]

In general you will most likely find them at most department/ large retail stores.

Hardware stores should definitely have them but they call them workshop foam floor mats instead but its the same thing

Noooo I'm not the first this time!!! >.<
But again, AWESOME STUFF to wake up to!
Really liked the advice on first creating a cheaper mock-up to make sure everything fits and all before blowing time and resources on the more expensive and permanent materials ^^
