Description EDIT: Tweaked the mouth and just relaxed the lips a little. not sure it's better - just different.

I didn't really intend on doing this at all, but I've stumbled across a couple of decent human/face tutorials recently, and this character's been in my head for a while, not to mention I really need to work on my human faces, so I thought I'd kill a few birds with one stone (or PSD file, as it were) and do this.

It wasn't nearly as speedy as it was meant to be, and the face isn't great either (but it was practice, so I'm not complaining) but I do like the outcome over all. The mouth could do with a little tweaking (IMO) and the nose is...well, just don't go there. It's bad. They're the bane of my existance. But I like the eyes

I never design my characters the way you're 'supposed to' - ie, give them a motive and a past and think about what drives them, where they might have come from yada, yada...

Either a name or a face will just come to me and my gifted if slightly unstable Muse builds on that. Sometimes I know everything about a character for weeks without knowing what they look like. Other times, I know their faces and clothing or fighting styles, but couldn't tell you if they have a brother; it really depends.

This character is no different. She leapt to mind a few days ago, and as of yet I don't know much about her at all; her eye colour may yet change but I know that her name is Azalea (though she insists on 'Azza' since she's of the opinion her parents were smoking something when they named her). She's raised herself, mostly, with loving but whimsical and ungrounded parents and she has a flair for creativity, design and invention. She is, however, blunt to the point of causing hurt or insult and takes some getting used to - when you can get her to talk at all. And just as an FYI, that's a fishtail/herringbone braid in her hair. Gotta love 'em

At the minute I'm trying to work out what to do with her. Some of my characters are more insistent than others, so she'll get used somewhere since she won't leave me alone. There may be more art, but its likely she'll end up in a short story.

Feel free to point out errors in anatomy/shading/anything else - this was for human facial practice, mostly, and I'm aware there are glaring mistakes.

Uh...I think around 3-4 hours? I didn't count, tbh...
No refs (yikes - practice with no refs. I'm an idiot )

Noses used to be the bane of my existence, but now I draw three circles, with the middle one slightly bigger, and it works, most times. (Does this even make any sense?)

That said, those eyes are utterly gorgeous. Love the hair, too, such a beautiful colour, and that braid!

I've seen that method too (don't worry, it makes sense ) I just can't make it work for me. Still searching XD

And thank you - I adore her eyes, too! Definitely the part of drawing a face I enjoy the most And I'm fond of fishtail braids (I can just sit watching the TV and braid up my own hair this way) and Azza just happened to appear to me with one ^^

Aww.

I need to learn how to make them. I don't know where I'd practice, though, since my sister doesn't like being my guinea pig and both mine and my mum's hair are too short for it. XD

Yep.

I know that feeling. I don't like my hair being played with, but my cousin is a happy victim volunteer. You can buy styling busts - a fake head with a wig or hair attached for styling purposes (My parents are looking to get me one).

Another option, which I've used before, is if you have spare string, just cut several pieces the same length, knot them all at the top and then use the hanging ends like hair. the more strings you have the more intricately you can braid. Fishtail plaits are two parts, but you need to manipulate four pieces of hair; I think they're one of the easiest to do, as long as you keep it tight.

I thought of using string, yes. That should work. I just really am too lazy to do it, XD I find busts to be really quite creepy so that's out of the question. XD

Haha; laziness is debilitating XD

And they can be a bit creepy - which is why I'm very careful about which one I get so I don't have nightmares because of the face (or no face )

My sister had a barbie one, to put make-up on and style her hair and whatnot. It was creepy to begin with, but was just made worse by my sister's attempts at a decent make-up.

Thanks! And I love her hair, too

I didn't use any tutorials to actually paint this - I just sat down with PS and started without looking at anything else, but I was doing a general browse of DA for 'human faces' 'painting faces' 'human tutorial' 'face tutorial' etc and I also stumbled onto a couple of artists (sadly, names I can't remember now) with styles I liked. A combination of that just pushed me to take a break from show entries and have a go.

I do that sometimes…just browse around da and find things I like to get inspiration. Because, while almost everything has pretty much been done at one time or another, you can put your own spin on it
