Description So, as I said...you get spoiled with 2 icons in one night And this one is fun, too

Enjoy!

For the breedsheet (which has a lot of information to fit in, so will be arranged in a set of sheets), I'm illustrating various key aspects. Both because I think it helps to have a visual guide, and because I like the idea of something more interactive, and this means I get to put my mental images of various scenes to good use

The illustrations will be posted over the next week or so as numbered icons, with the proper information to come.

So...I thought the best way to head up the sections on breeding and pregnant mares, would be to show you a pregnant mare, and here she is

This is a pony type, silver sea based piebald (black tobiano) mare with a Kaudern's Cardinal SoulFish.

Silver as a base colour is another variation, also fairly rare. The Cardinal fish is a common class however.

And this is where it gets FUN

Within days of a successful breeding, the pregnant mare's SoulFish will 'lay' and egg, on one side of the horse, in the belly area. The egg is usually tiny, round, and pale pink, blue or white. Within yet more days, it will 'hatch' into a replica of the Mother's SoulFish, whatever it might be. The tiny baby SoulFish will slowly grow as the foal does, usually tagging around after the Mother's SoulFish. You won't begin to see its individual personality until the very last month of pregnancy, or even until the foal is born.

When the mare gives birth, the imprint of her foal's Soul will fade away on her coat, usually within days, though it can take up to 2 weeks. There is one exception to this - coming later The SoulFish belonging to the foal is already living in its coat when it's born, and this will not be a replica of the mother's, but that foal's own. (Genetics dictate class of SoulFish, but individual species is down to chance).

There's a fair bit more in this chapter, but that's for the breed book

So, a few facts:

1. Foals are born already able to close the valve in their nasal passage, enabling them to submerge in water without drowning. Its an involuntary muscle that doesn't need practice.
2. Ultrasounds aren't strictly necessary, as keeping an eye on the baby SoulFish in the mother's coat can usually forewarn of any issue. The baby Fish won't follow its mother, but spin in circles, act lethargic or get jittery if anything is wrong. Its presence is also a firm indicator of whether a breeding has had any success.
3. In the rare event a mother conceives twins, she will get two tiny SoulFish babies in her coat.
4. After the birth of the foal, the baby's SoulFish imprint on the mother clouds over. It becomes a dusty colour in the coat, losing any markings, before it fades away. This colour change happens hours after the birth.
5. Long tails can easily get in the way when birthing, so it's not unusual for Keepers to cut back the tails fairly high when the mother's teats begin to wax, meaning birth is imminent.
6. Moreso in wild groups, but even in domestic ones, mothers may behave like dolphin pods; only feeding their own foals, but helping to mother others in a community parenting deal. If you're keeping pregnant SeaSouls with other expecting mothers, be careful, as some other horses don't like this openness with their own foals.
7. They like to give birth in the water. It feels more natural for them and the water soothes the contractions. As foals shouldn't be near the sea this young, ponds, lakes, massive baths or - as is used on the island - Tide pools away from the ocean are all good options.
8. Maternal behaviour can vary. Some mothers are okay with people around their young, others like to keep them amongst the herd at first. Get to know the mare before breeding so you can avoid a nasty kick
9. A licence is needed to breed SeaSouls off of Keeper's Island. This licence can be bought through the online shop with enough currency. It just requires a simple application paper, available to fill in and send off. Or it will be. Available, that is

As of right now, all imports are at least 3 years old. SeaSouls haven't been off the Island for generations, the last thing they want to do is send off youngsters. That said, I hope its understandable why this mare isn't up for grabs as an import yet. She's heavily pregnant and her foal will need to be weaned before she can be exported.

But if foal imports, or even more fun, mare and foal/pregnant mare imports interests anyone, let me know. I think it'd be fun to do some of those later on!

So far: (and having to switch to links, as there's now too many thumbs! We've reached a milestone!

For the art...This was fiddly because of all the parts, but it was actually straightforward to do. Thankfully

It turned out having more there than first intended, as I realised other bits were relevant, but hopefully it's not too much of an overload. I've had to drag in four separate subchapters under care, so I did what I could. I'm oddly pleased with most of it, now, considering its just a bunch of random items

Haha, everyone wants this one

She's heavily pregnant, though, so she won't be for sale for a bit, as her foal will need her, and the youngest horses available at the moment are 3 years old

Oooh this is beautiful! And a baby SoulFish, omghowcute*w* Do you do speedpaints? I'd love to see how exactly you're drawing, I've been adoring your style for a while and it's really making me curious.

Tattered-Dreams In reply to ReneeScarted [2014-10-21 14:35:05 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! And yes; uber cuteness for all!

As for speed paints...I do do them, but I'm not great with them. They start off speedy and slow down a lot because my perfectionist muse rears her head . As for timelapses or JMs, I've tried both before. JM has a hissy fit with my computer; trying to share my screen or stream while I work causes a lag between my pen and the reaction, so its just too disorienting to do anything. I did manage to use some software to record my screen while I worked, but the file was so ridiculously huge for just 45 minutes of work that I can't share it. I'd need to compress it and tweak it a lot first and I just haven't had time.

So in theory its something I'd like, but my laptop just won't handle it. But I'm always happy to answer questions on the hows and whys, so if you ever have any about particular things, feel free to ask

Yeah JoinMe and Photoshop hated each other here as well, JM and SAI are okay though. Maybe record your work, speed it up and put it on youtube *w*

Well I just wanted to see the creation of all these beauties, I hope you'll find a way somewhen

Tattered-Dreams In reply to ReneeScarted [2014-10-21 17:54:44 +0000 UTC]

I don't use SAI at all, and I'm still learning PS years later, so I think I'll stick with this XD. And that was my plan for the recorded file I have; to speed it and bung it elsewhere, but its just too big for that right now. I need to compress it before youtube even has a chance! I hope I'll get it sorted one day, though. It would be fun to share some of my process

I love how flawlessly you've mashed dolphin and horse behavior with these guys.
And I agree, she is one beautiful mare <3
And and, I think mare and foal adopts would be really neat! Make them open to experienced breeders or something at least at first perhaps but what a fabulous way to get new blood in the herds

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tattered-Dreams In reply to OceanLore [2014-10-21 12:13:17 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! Honestly the mashing was sort of an accident; I just felt that this kind of behaviour fitted them and went with it

And you're not alone there. I didn't expect her to be so utterly adored so fast. I feel bad that she's pregnant and can't be exported now XD

And what an amazing idea! Mare and foal/pregnant mare adopts only to experienced breeders! I love that Thank you - if I ever do it, I'll be sure to mention you ooh, the plans!

Gurl, you weren't kidding when you said this one was fun!

I think idea of pregnancy with this breed is awesome!  The idea of being able to draw a preggo mare, with the foal's SeaSoul visible on the coat is absolutely awesome.

I love how you have thought out all the little details, from the placement of the egg on the mother's belly, to the baby SeaSoul following its mother around (and being a great indicator of health), to the fading from the mother's coat on a certain timeline.  It is such a unique trait and one that makes me love this breed even more.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tattered-Dreams In reply to ReQuay [2014-10-21 00:22:29 +0000 UTC]

Hehe, thank you! Glad you think so, too

Pregnancy with SeaSouls was one of the early ideas I had for the breed, though it's been adjusted and fine tuned as I went along. (Having betaed the draft sheet for me, you might even notice where differences are; eggs, for example, were only brought in recently). But yes, one thing I've noticed - and I'm guilty of it too - is that in HARPG, you often get a breeding image, then a foal design a day later. In addition to just liking the idea, I felt that something visible during the pregnancy might encourage people to draw that period of time, at least once, before their foal is born I can hope ^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ReQuay In reply to Tattered-Dreams [2014-11-09 04:54:06 +0000 UTC]

I can't speak for the HARPG community itself, but if (or should I say when) my mare gets preggo... I will def be doing some pregnancy pics of her just for the enjoyment of the momma-baby-combo Seasouls.
That was a brilliant plan on your part - as I imagine quite a few people will want to draw the mares during this stage.

Omgggg this mare <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 She's definitely my favorite so far, she's so freaking stunning!!

OMG, the little baby SoulFish<3 It's so cuuuute. I love this concept!! Where did you get this idea Tatty!?? :0 It's incredible!!!

Also, will the imports be sold through points or art? :3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tattered-Dreams In reply to HayleyWolf [2014-10-20 23:56:56 +0000 UTC]

Aww, thank you!!! I'm so sorry that she's not a possible for the imports (she needs to stay on the island for her baby, but maybe in the future ^^)

Glad you like the little baby SoulFish, too That was one of the earlier quirks that I decide on when first drafting the breed. Honestly...I'm not too certain where the idea came from. It just kind of marched into my head, half formed, and then I had to drag in a couple of people to help me with feedback and research. Everything else just kind of snowballed as it came together. I'm amazed with the reaction it's gotten so far!

Imports will be both art and points, to cater to as many people as possible, but the first ones will be art only. I really just want to see them drawn, and so getting art started is a priority And I'm planning for raffles to take place as well, for those who don't have points, or much time to draw, but the first batch of auction imports will be out before that.

Thank you! Some of it fell into place nicely (like the little SoulFish), other aspects took some working out and puzzling over, but its sort of there, now. As long as it seems thought out and functional, I'm happy

And thanks ^^She ended up kind of cute, I guess

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ribbon-Wren In reply to Tattered-Dreams [2014-10-21 01:48:18 +0000 UTC]

It all seems very well thought out! You've put a stunning amount of work into these SeaSouls, and it really shows.

I have a question; what would happen if a SeaSoul was bred to a normal horse? Or would that not be possible?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tattered-Dreams In reply to Ribbon-Wren [2014-10-21 02:23:18 +0000 UTC]

Its taken a fair bit of tweaking and puzzling, but definitely worth it. I'm only happy when I've got all the little details and quirks in there - I think they really make the breed

And ooooh...Crossbreeds Cross breeding is definitely possible, yes. As for what happens...stay tuned! More on that later

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ribbon-Wren In reply to Tattered-Dreams [2014-10-26 15:29:10 +0000 UTC]

I think that all the details you put into them make them all the more realistic! It's really a great idea that you put the information onto different pages in a "book". I've seen way too may breedsheets with too much information crammed onto them, but you've avoided that completely while still keeping all the info needed.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tattered-Dreams In reply to Ribbon-Wren [2014-10-26 15:49:47 +0000 UTC]

Same here

And while I love the look of the book, its actually really impractical XD - difficult to edit, and there's still plenty of info I didn't fit in (though at least you get the extra bits in the facts posted with the icons) And there's the appendices... The other way I might solve it later is to post a version as a journal, so it can all fit.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ribbon-Wren In reply to Tattered-Dreams [2014-11-01 18:25:34 +0000 UTC]

Ooh, I can see how that might be hard to edit. >.< Is there any way you can use Microsoft Word or another word processing program to create it instead? There must be some way to make something that looks like a book but is easy to edit.
I'm sure journals can work too! You would still be able to put the images in as thumbnails, right?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tattered-Dreams In reply to Ribbon-Wren [2014-11-02 21:34:44 +0000 UTC]

I'm not entirely sure there is another way that would work for viewing in the group. At least not the way it is now.

I can use journals easily enough, but you need a supergroup to use journal skins, and I just don't have that kind of funding. I have to raise points every so often just to keep up a 3 month premi on my own account. So any html coding would just turn into a bog standard journal if I did put the Breedbook up as one. Not that it isn't an option. I did it the way I did because I've always really wanted to do a breedbook like that; as pages of an old journal type thing. So it fulfilled that.

Having discovered its a bit tricky, I'm keeping the journal conversion on the back burner, and it may all end up in that format - or as Literature pieces in the gallery, which is also an option - in the future if I find I need to add a lot more info down the line. But hopefully, the pages as they are, the Appendices I'm working on, and the journals in the group will cover everything for at least a little while

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ribbon-Wren In reply to Tattered-Dreams [2014-11-03 02:48:22 +0000 UTC]

Ooh, I see how that would be a little more difficult to use the journals. :\ Is there any way you could hold a fundraiser sort of thing here on da to gain points for a supergroup? I would happily donate some points if you're ever collecting for a supergroup.
The old journal look does make it look very nice and more authentic. Gets you more into the world of the breed, and it might not have the same effect in a journal.

Since you did just make them, I think you're right in saying that you probably won't need to edit them for a while yet.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tattered-Dreams In reply to Ribbon-Wren [2014-11-08 22:06:23 +0000 UTC]

Lol, a little bit.

I could hold a fundraiser in theory, but its very costly to buy a supergroup subscription, so that's a lot to raise, even with quite a few people chipping in, and I just don't think the breed is well known enough at this point to have the backing. If it gets to that point, though, I do appreciate that you'd be willing to help ^^

But for now, the breedbook works. Edits will just have to be tackled when I need to
