Long story short, challenged me to reimagine a Pokemon, and we agreed on Samurott. I can't really call it a redesign, as I rather drew it in my style oops. And the redesign itself isn't all that different from the original either argh.I'm pretty happy how this picture turned out, I really like it. I assembled myself a new brush in SAI which I used here for the first time, and also tried out using colored outlines.
helped me with the background because holy shit I'm so bad at them. Then she wanted to tease me a bit and it resulted in me realising that the new brush I assembled I was so proud of basically is the smudge tool ffffffff- Or maybe it's actually not and it just resembles it a lot (atleast I hope so because I like that brush).

Great artwork, and an interesting take on a Samurott redesign.
On the backgrounds: eventually you'll get to a point where you consider the background and character as a whole. Sometimes the background may even come to you before the character - the background determining the pose the character takes.
When I work I create all the layers (background, foreground, effects, etc.) at the start of a drawing - drafting each layer before tightening the details up.
As a suggestion: it might help you to try drawing a background before you start drawing the character - just as an experiment.
Sorry I took so long for me to say anything about this piece - it was hard to put what I wanted to say into words (I'm still uncertain that I'm conveying my thoughts properly).

Well, usually I don't use backgrounds because I don't see a need for it. Sure, it makes everything better (if the right choice has been made of course), but my junk usually can go without anything. Just sometimes I feel the need that there has to be something, and then I often find myself clueless, because I still focus on the character itself and I can't really come up with something which would compliment it (for example your Viridion picture, having leaves in the background).
I knew I had to do something with the background here because of the colored outlines, it wouldn't have worked with white.
And I'd like to try out your suggestion, the only problem is that I need to sketch something first before I can digitally work on it, so that's a bit difficult. Ah well, I just have to experiment with things, I'll make it work somehow like usual.

Btw he can use shell blade with his sheathed sword on his front limbs which make a perfect sense cause sheathed blade draw is so sumari-ish

The fingers on the forearms might look a little odd, but I do agree that this form is nicer in terms of design and functionality.

My problem with the original is, that I'm kind of wondering how it's even standing on those legs, not to mention how it's able to use the shell blades with those claws.
So I gave it fingers and improved shell blades with a grip, aswell as letting on that it's easily able to stand on its hind legs and actually use the blades both at the same time.
