That's very nice of you to say so. Thanks a lot. This image can also be found in my Red Bubble gallery. Lots more people have viewed and commented on it there. It's a great community on RB. A different crowd to Dev Art, perhaps a little older. Trad art is much more respected on there than on here.

Here's a link if you're interested: [link]

I'm going to be starting my exhibition work in the next few days. It's in April, I can't wait. The work is going to be similar to this, but much bigger and hopefully a bit better too. I'll be posting a new painting every few weeks from now on.

Happy New Year!

This is great. I love the amount of detail you put into this. If you didn't put acrylic painting in the title, I would have gotten it confused with a photo.

Thanx a lot. It's part of a series I'm working on. The proper exhibition work will be a lot better than this.
Havn't chatted to you for a while, how are u?

Heya

I think you have done well here overall with the portrait.
The colour and tonation is great up next to the brightness of the subjects clothes.
You have a level of realism which is understood however if you wish to make it more realistic try to focuss on pushing your minute detail further in all areas of the piece.

Try to push the tonation alittle further so we see indivdual pours and textures of the faces surface to make it seem realistic rather than painted, and try to stay away from idealised facial information.
You have done well on the hair however try to avoid the repetativness of the swirling hairs, as this could lead to the audience thinking the artist is rushing themselves. Also use thinner brushes when depicting single hairs, to again make it more realistic in relation to actual hairs.

I think you use of colour on the clothes and hat are great, you have captured the materials well in this
And the eyes of this piece have a great connection with the viewer, there is an awareness of depth there.
Again just try to look at extremes of tone more carefully.. the lights lighter and the darks darker sort of thing when building up the facial features..

Hi Andrew, thanks a lot for your feedback. It's really appraciated.

I certainly will attempt to push things a lot further when I come to paint the portraits for the exhibition. This was the first realistic portrait I've ever done, so I was bound to miss somethings out and get a few things wrong.

I really enjoyed doing the turban. It has about 6 to 8 layers of paint, each one using a stippling/dabbing of colour from the brush onto the board. It was pretty laborious, although it didn't take much thinking. I think there must be like a guzillian brush dabs, but the effort was worth it. I think I spent a day just on this!

I will have a go at doing the skin pores, and understand what you mean when you say to make it look more realistic than just a painting.

Hair was a real problem for me. I have researched a lot of work by the old masters and looked at tutorials. Most say not to paint individual hairs, because it can look unreaistic, it is better apparently to simplify areas of tone within the hairy area (LOL hairy area!). Then just to highlight subtle areas rather than the whole thing. I only did mine this way because the subjects beard was really wirey and it was obvious that you could see clumps of individual hairs.

The eyes are one of the most important things in a portrait and one of the main reasons why I chose the photo in the first place.

I have decided that rather than start the proper paintings now, I am going to practice a bit more with some self-portraits, paintings of family members, movie stars and musicians etc.

I need to try out quite a few things before I can attach big price tags to my work.

Thanks again. I look foward to seeing more of your work as you produce it.

Infact looking at it right now, I don't even think it's finished!

I could add some glazes onto the beard to push it back a bit, so it's not so bright. Also, I could add shadows to some hairs so they could less 'stuck on'.

I could also bring out the highlights more on his nose and cheeks.

Ummm, what else? Hmmmmmmmm.

Thanks for the comment.

I didn't want to spend too long on this one so it's only 8x12 inches in size.

The paintings for my exhibition will be bigger, at around 16x20 inches.
